You're totally right. I'm now going to go and tell Mr.C that I've never been to the Great Yorkshire Show .....
It was tongue in cheek, that's a fact. Find me a Scotsman who wouldn't make a tongue in cheek comment about wanting England to lose. You've obviously been misinformed as to the whole situation and consequently dislike Murray. That's your own prerogative, but the majority of Brits can take a joke and want a fellow Brit to do well.
Never mind the tongue in cheek part about Murray, i know people who don't like/support Murray because of his personality etc. They just don't like him as a person. It all boils down to Identity. When we play Burnley at Turf Moor - 1000 of us Barnsley fans are together from 'Yorkshire'. When we go down to Selhurst Park, we are together as 'Northerners'. When we go on holiday to Greece, we are 'English'. But if you meet someone from Scotland when you are on holiday, you are 'British'. Contextually dependent identities etc.
That's okay mate, I wasn't even born in Yorkshire. So am not even a proper Yorkshireman as some are fond of reminding me. And my Mam's a Londoner and my other Grandad was from Bolton and my family name is originally French. Plus I'm an adopted kid to start with, so I'm proper lost. Fella on Facebook was describing the dislike by some of Murray as 'racist'. Which is rich, seeing as most nationalistic bravado is aimed at the English. And any Englishman at that, not the historic ruling elite who they should be the ones they take issue with.
