For the record, my brother-in-law and wife live IN Cairo, about 100 yards from the square where half the stuff was kicking off. I've talked to him about stuff like Sharm.

Egypt relies on the huge tourism in Sharm and cannot afford it to be affected. The people there are lovely as they want you to come back.

The Foreign Office advise against all travel to parts of Egypt. It looks like Sharm is ok, but there was a big bombing there only a few years ago and things might get worse between now and when you go. Insurance might also be an issue...

This link confirms Sharm is not included in the advice, as I stated above. There have been more bombings in London than Sharm - do people not go there due to terrorist threat?

Tunisia is great if you want North Africa. I've been and I would recommend it.

Actually you're completely wrong. The government advice is NOT to avoid travelling to sharm el sheikh, in fact the advice specifically mentions Sharm El Sheikh as somewhere where there is no reason not to travel. Egypt is a big old place you know and Sharm El Sheikh is around 400km away from Cairo. And that is the same distance as london to newcastle. During the london riots were people avoiding newcastle just in case?

Not that I'd ever go to Sharm El Sheikh. for me it is absolute lunacy to travel all the way to a fantastic country like Egypt with world famous sites and then spend your vacation in a warmer version of benidorm.

 

I was there a month before those 2005 bombings, the shopping centre we used to go in most days was hit by the blast. As someone has pointed out above your more likely to die in London than Sharm.

 

English bloke killed there recently in a hit and run. Can get killed anywhere.

Not sure about DT taking about kidnappings, the protests were against their own government, not against foreigners, and as many people have pointed out, Sharm is vastly different to being in Cairo.

We went to Tunisia just a couple of months before the uprising there, they were fine with us.

I'd give another vote to Croatia, Dubrovnik is a beautiful place.

 

unless you like snorkeling and want to see coral, I wouldnt bother, you can get a much higher standard and newer hotel in the Antalya region of Turkey, its a shorter flight and you've a better chance of avoiding gastric mess. We went to Sharm 4 years ago and it was feeling a bit dated then, times moved on, Belek or Lara Beach is where its at. FACT.

 

Not been myself but mate went last year and he said he'd never go again after extolling its virtues only 4 years previously. Apparently the place has been over-run by obnoxious and demanding Russians who have spoiled it for other nationalities. He also had the shits for a week.

 

Just got back a couple of weeks ago. Had 10 days, wish it had been a week, got the raging trots from then on and still not fully recovered, but it was cross the board with different people from different hotels getting it. glad i went but wouldn't go back. 40 plus from 7-30 and really consistant heat. Snorkled off Taren Island which was worth every penny,

A lot depends where you stay, we went all inclusive and its very hit and miss with the food.

Another vote for Croatia from me. I am here right now, in Makarska on the Dalmatia coastline, due back Wednesday. I love the place. Second time in as many years for us and we want to make it a hat trick next year.

If you want somewhere quiet we went to Cavtat last year which was just around the bay from Dubrovnik. Half an hour on a boat or ten minutes on a bus into Dub when you want to visit but away from the crowds otherwise - it truly was lovely. Not sure you would to stay in Dubrovnik itself if you don't want crowds as it is only a small city and gets very crowded. 10,000 people a day spew off cruise ships by all accounts.

Makarska is a bit busier than Cavtat and is therefore better for families. It is nice and relaxed with a lovely atmosphere.

We fancy either Porec or Rovinj on the istrian peninsula next year but honestly, you can't go wrong with Croatia unless you like your beaches to have sand on them as most of the beaches here are shingle.

Just got back from a day trip to Split and now, thanks to the wonders of modern technology I am writing this in a beach bar with a pint next to me, connected to the hotel's free wi-fi - lovely!

 

Much of SES is actually owned by the Egyptian Army. So really that makes it a prime target for them Muslim brotherhood chaps as they have a slight disagreement with the military right now. I'd still go as I'm pretty sure it's safe atm but once the real **** gets started (which it will) I wouldn't bother.
