Coming back from holiday in Croatia we were in Split Airport this morning. Boarding had just been announced and everyone got up who was sat near the gate ready to queue up to board the plane, and then suddenly it kicked off - A old bloke, looked about 65-70 and was on his own, got into an altercation with some cocky tw@t just behind us - although I didn't see the build up, it appeared that admittedly the old bloke may have pushed in, and then when the young bloke started mouthing at him, he put a hand up to him or tried to push him or whatever. The old bloke, from what others said, admittedly may have been a little beligerent, like some old people can be, and should not have pushed in (if indeed he did - as we were all at the jostling for position stage), and he shouldn't have tried to push the bloke when he kicked off, but it was a pathetic scared little push and he was out of his depth pretty quickly and I reckon he was pretty shocked and scared to find himelf in that position, especially being on his own.

What it definitely did NOT warrant is the young tw@t, with virtually no warning, knocking him out with one punch. Old bloke went straight down, banged his head on the side of one of the fixed chairs in the departure lounge, and immediately had a massive egg sized bump on the side of his head. He was helped up, after a minute or two, but looked pretty out of it and it could have been so much worse.

Everyone waiting for the flight was pretty distraught at witnessing it to be honest, police and paramedics were quickly on hand and neither of them boared the plane so we were held up while their luggage was removed. I don't reckon the old bloke would have been fit to fly to be honest and the young tw@t obviously was held by the Police.

It was certainly a nasty incident - I wish there was a way to find out both whether the old bloke was OK, and whether they charged the kid and locked him up or just chucked him on a later flight - I hope it wasn't the latter because you should not get away with that - I hate w@nkers like that and he needs to be taught a harsh lesson. Obnoxious *******.

He does need to be taught a lesson but so does the old guy if he was being provocative and then assaulted someone by pushing them. Being old isn't an excuse to be a lovely person. But being a lovely person shouldn't mean somebody else has to be an even bigger one back to you.

Hope the old boys ok and wish him a quick recovery. No matter what he did, no veterian deserves that type of treatment from anyone, sickening that there are people like that out there.

Never understood the rush to get on a plane first. Would rather spend an extra 15 minutes with my legs stretched out in the departure lounge.

Personally, I've never had a flight leave when I am still waiting at the back of the line to get on.

Both ended up being in the wrong, But being old isn't an excuse for being a lovely person. And he instigated the incident. That said the other guy wants dry loving for hitting an old guy.

It's those who fly with Easyjet and spend an extra £10/15 for "speedy boarding" which usually means they get on the bus which takes you to the plane first. Value for money there!

Also, if you're travelling on your own and you get on first you have no choice who you sit next to. It's the people who get on later who get to choose . . .

That's a fair enough assessment - the old bloke shouldn't have done the "ignorant old bloke" thing that can be common, where they think that being old entitles them to be rude. However, the young kid's reaction was a shocking over-reaction and typical of the society we live in these days. The "grown up" reaction would have been to shrug, raise his eyebrows maybe, laugh with the person next to them about rude old people perhaps, or even politely asked him not to push in (assuming he was english speaking and able to understand the request), not to deck him, and in different circumstances, quite possibly have hospitalised him or even killed him.

I hope he is still in Croatia, in a cell tonight.

I don't really get the rush either - I used to with Easyjet as, unless you paid for speedy boarding to get first dabs, it was just a dash for the remaining seats. However, Easyjet have switched to allocated seats now (pay £3 on their website to choose your seat or get allocated one at check in). So there is no reason for the rush through the door any more.

Depends what you are looking for really. If you are looking for a lads holiday then it wouldn't really be the place for you as it is not that type of place - it's more of a laid back couples or family place.

I don't think the accomodation is especially cheap, certainly not by, say, Spain standards. In some places there are lots of apartments that are cheaper than hotels, but the hotels are around £100 a night upwards.

Once there though the day to day spends are reasonable at the moment, although they have just joined the EU (as of last week) - long term, it remains to be seen whether that will change things.

You get around 8.5 Kuna to the pound. As a guide:

Local beer (Karlovakia) is around 16kn for 0.5 litres draught (£1.90)
A standard main meal is around 80kn (£9.40), unless you go for steak (130kn, £15.30). Starters (soups etc) are around 30kn (£3.50)
Fish is a speciality over there but some of it such as seabass is expensive at around 300kn (£35)

Most of the beaches are shingle so if you like sand then go somewhere else.

There's plenty of stuff to do (watersports etc) and trips you can take, both of a purely tourist nature (boat trips to the local islands like Hvar or Brac) or cultural, such as visits to Dubrovnik, or Split, both of which are beautiful cities. We went to the Krka National Park this time around which is spectacular.

All in all I would describe it as similar to a trip to Italy for example, but slightly cheaper. It's a beautiful, laid back and relaxing place to visit and we will go back (a lot).

Neither are blameless but violence never solves anything and it sounds like the reaction of the younger blokes was disproportionate. Despite behaving provocatively the old guy didn’t deserve knocking out and I hope he is ok.
