Once David Flitcroft has brought in one more striker, he will be happy to take his Barnsley squad into the new season with no further additions.

The Reds boss, who has rubbished rumours that he is targeting former England forward Andy Johnson, plans to bring in some triallists later in the summer and is constantly monitoring the transfer market in case one of his players gets injured, but he would be happy with signing only one more player.

Flitcroft told the Chronicle: "Once we get another striker I think the squad will be well-balanced and I will be very comfortable to go into the season with that squad.

"In four weeks it could be a totally different picture because we have tough pre-season games to navigate and we could pick up injuries, but for now I am happy."

The Barnsley manager claims he came close to signing Michael Higdon, the 29-year-old striker who was the top-scorer in the Scottish Premier League last season. The six foot two Liverpudlian, who was a free agent after leaving Motherwell, has now joined Dutch side NEC Nijmegen despite receiving a phone call from Flitcroft asking him to reconsider during his medical in Holland.

Flitcroft said: "Michael got a fantastic offer financially but I think that, if he came to the Championship, he would have come to Barnsley. We missed out on Michael but the search goes on. We will move onto the next target and then the one after that.

"We're after a player that can score goals. Whether we find a player who can run in behind or a mobile target man like Chris O'Grady, we will get the right striker for the club."

Barnsley had a French midfielder on trial during their pre-season trip to Spain but decided not to sign him. Flitcroft is expected to welcome more triallists to Oakwell over the coming weeks. He said: "A lot of players will be out of work and we may get a gem who's prepared to not take great money for six months or a year."

After last season ended, Flitcroft said that he was expecting bids for some of his players but he says there have been none so far. He said: "I speak to a lot of people in football. They ask the question about our players but there's been no official approaches. I'm pleased about that but I think what we have seen by the seven out-of-contract players signing is that this squad doesn't want to go anywhere else. When you build something quite unique, players have a difficult decision to make. We don't want to lose players but if someone made a big offer then you don't know what will happen but we are in a good position."

Also: The Euro Friendly special offer is available from the box office until 6pm tonight (previously 5pm)

In the not too distant future he (well, Mansford) needs to tie down likes of Mellis, Perkins, Dawson who are all out of contract this time next year. But I've heard Flicker acutely aware of that

Some information about it on quite a few other official sites (Huddersfield Town, Forest, Port Vale, Notts County, Birmingham etc). Probably be an article on ours in the next few days. I think you just state the code when buying a ticket at the box office/over the phone. Haven't a clue where Barnsley fans can get the code from though? Chronicle?

Bournemouth were very close to signing him before he chose to go abroad. Leeroy Lita is one of four players told by Swansea to find another club. Wouldn't surprise me if we went in for him. Imagine the Wednesday forum if Lita/COG were banging the goals in for us as our strike partnership. Their forum would break quicker than the BBS does.
