Happened to me when I was 10. Stewart Barrowclough Whallop, straight in the mush. No St. John's - nowt! No-one gave a toss. Except for Stewart, who kept coming over to see if I was okay. Even in the second half when he was on the other wing. Well same wing, just other side of the field facing the other way. No permanent damage, I don't think. Then I had to get the bus home all on me own. Not like you spoilt set o basterds, with Dad's tekking yer in cars and that!!
The one today seemed nasty, looked like the guy broke his next or something. Got carried out on a stretcher, and I saw ambulance come at HT to take him. Game stopped for 10 mins, too. (some background for anyone not there)
How does the law stand on getting hit by footballs in a stand? is buying a ticket a disclaimer? Would you be covered on your insurance? It's always been either an exciting or funny possibility to me but this sounds like the guy got properly hurt- I've never considered that!
I'm not sure and don't want to make light of the incident today but it cannot be as bad as the young kid who was hit by a puck and killed at a Calgary Flames NHL game about 10 years ago. Seriously, can you imagine that in your worst nightmare?
Yeah it was Laurie who looks after the mascots Juniors and helps out in the dressing room. He's ok. I'm pretty sure it happened to him a few seasons ago as well.
He did, yes We met Laurie when Laura was a mascot eight years ago. He's a lovely bloke and a real gentleman. I'm glad to hear he's okay.
Re: He did, yes Yeah we (The Supporter's Trust) and the Football Club regularly get letters of thanks from mascots and their parents saying how much they enjoy it and what a fantastic job he does.
Re: He did, yes My lad was mascot for FA Cup against Burnley last season and Laurie was a true gent with him and myself, made sure he was happy etc etc. He made a little grimace towards end as we walked back from pitch and he casually mentioned he was in a bit of pain today, I asked what was wrong and he said only a bit of cancer but i'll sort the bugger, Glad to hear he's ok enough to be getting in the way of the balls at matches, wish him all the best as they don't make em like they used too!!
