Love this post: Normally you'd assume "his wage demands were too high...contract length too long...got a better offer from a bigger club....etc". But, he's signed for Barnsley on a two year deal so I'm not sure they apply. Another iron in the fire perhaps? http://www.drfc-vsc.co.uk/index.php?topic=240861.0
"If Mvoto had signed a contract with us then I hope we demanded a fee from Barnsley to compensate us for the messing about this has caused. Another centre half may cost us more money now."
Ha Ha! Whoever wrote that must be a proper plank. If he had signed a contract for them he wouldn't have been free to drive down the road and sign for us against Donny's wishes in the first place - idiot!
I have just replied to the 'Mvoto signs for Barnsley' thread. My reply was very honest. But I guarantee they see it differently. . First time on their forum for a bit. **** me it's depressing. Even we weren't that bad during Keith's breakdown.
"Enjoy your greedy overpaid players - you deserve them." Classic. Obviously Donny fans know nothing about football as well as personal hygiene.
Always enjoy reading other boards. Usual blend of fury, stupidity, then the odd voice of reason. No different to this lovely BBS of ours. It feels good to be on the 'other side' of these stories for once, and I sense is the start of things to come. But we have no idea really, if he's actually any good. Hopefully we'll get to see him tomorrow against Bordeaux
spot on mate, hopefully he is the centre half we have been after for years but tbh I haven't a clue because personally I have never heard of him, so lets give him a chance and see what happens
One of their posters response... OK, I'll bite History - Meh, you sound like a Leeds/Forest fan. Largely irrelevant to the present. What do prospective players care about what a club did before they were born? What have you won lately that made you irresistible to M'voto? Ground size - irrelevant if you don't fill it. Wouldn't trade with you either. Fan base - on a par until the last couple of years, admittedly after many years behind. Currently lagging slightly, but potentially greater. Achievements - Again, what have you won lately? Are you counting avoiding relegation for a sustained period? I'd gladly argue that coming from where we were 15 years ago to where we are now puts us firmly ahead in this department. Manager - both unproven. Next. Squad - As you'd expect, we're clearly under construction, and as such we have no idea what we'll look like by the time the window closes. But if you insist on comparing currently, I think we'd take you in a 5-a-side. I'll go ahead and throw in another more tangible, relevant and important criteria, namely the board. I wouldn't swap ours for a Saudi Prince, a Russian oil oligarch, or an Indian poultry magnate... Certainly not for yours! To be honest, I don't think there's much between us at all. If your longer sustained position in the lower reaches of the Championship gives you a slight edge, I can accept that, but if you think it sufficiently significant to grant you a figurative step above us, you're deluded. Momentum can count for a lot, and we are not used to getting beaten. We also have ambition, which in my opinion, seemingly far exceeds your own. I don't entirely disagree with your last paragraph; we are after all, "the likes of Doncaster". That said, you oddly neglected to include yourselves in that list of over-achieving small clubs, which you clearly belong to. I'd argue that perhaps Yeovil and Bournemouth are the only clubs in the Championship that are not at least as 'big' as Barnsley. - Fan base on a par until last couple of years - it's not been on a par for 30 years. They were still a couple of thousand down when they first joined the championship. Stats clearly not what this guy looks at. - His 15 year history assessment... he obviously thinks that a few promotions from the lower leagues, a Johnstone paints win and a QF in a micky mouse cup are greater than a Championship Play off final, 11 years playing at the second level in the last 15 years, 3 FA Cup quarter finals, 1 FA Cup semi final, League 1 play off final win.... - Their fan base potentially greater, that's what Pikey Ryan's been saying for years, in fact he said when they went up they would fill the stadium every week without doubt....it was full once. He also claimed that if they ever went to Wembley they would need 60,000 tickets....they sold 25,000 with a good rail network & London only 1.5hrs away, they only sold 21,000 for their Cardiff. Unfortunately the potential they have been talking about follow Leeds. I'll give them one season this time.
from a Donny poster: "How nice of Barnsley, with your one FA Cup victory in the year the Titanic sank, to let the likes of Doncaster come and play in your League." nice to have the recognition that we have spent the longest duration of any team in the second tier Let's not start getting like the S6 massives, though eh?
My favourite: "then for me i'll wave to him as the Good Ship Barnsley slides in to the Deep Black Ocean that is League one"
I can't believe one of them has actually had the cheek to say "I'll bite". I stated facts. I was courteous. I admitted we are a small club at this level nowadays. But to have the temerity to suggest they edge us on anything other than selling pegs is ridiculous. So much so that I'm not even going back on there to reply. In fact, they've probably nicked my login details by now. The only good thing to come out of this M'Voto deal (until he plays like a young Desailly) is that it's added spice to what is without doubt the shittest local derby we could have. I'd be more excited about playing The Rec, or ******* Pogmoor. At least when I discuss things on Owlstalk I always accept they're a bigger club than us. But the nature of this Pikey in particular is bizarre. It's like Rotherham telling the Blunts they're the bigger/better club just because they fluked their way out of a ***** league - like the Pikey's did. ******* Marcello Trotta. I was going to give the Pikey games a miss this season. Bigger fish to fry etc. And only so many free days and valuable days off to spend with the missus. But I think I'll try and make them now. If only to witness Cotterill and his pea sized heart running away from the ball/M'Voto. ******* Doncaster. Doncaster Rovers. (I bet this is how Wednesdayites feel about us....)
And to cap it all off, this player we've took off them won't even start for us.... We're all sat here waiting for McLean, l'd never heard of him.
You've hit the nail on the head there, their problem is a lot of Doncaster folk follow Leeds, you can't expect adults to switch clubs, it doesn't work that way. The way they have to increase the fanbase is to get them hooked when they are young, that process will take time and also needs progress on the pitch. Good luck to them. [QUOTE - Their fan base potentially greater, that's what Pikey Ryan's been saying for years, in fact he said when they went up they would fill the stadium every week without doubt....it was full once. I like the comment that said about squads - "we'd take you in a 5 a side" - classic! To be honest I hate all these "we're bigger than you are" arguments and going on other boards doing that makes us as bad as the Wednesday fans who do it here. I do think we have better facilities (training etc) which is probably what swung it for M'Voto, plus what the manager had to say as to what he's trying to achieve. I guess it didn't include the line about over-achieving just to stay in the division! Reading that board is funny though - a few of their fans really unhappy with how their pre-season and squad building is going!
