I notice that the radio dee dar ad for the footy at the moment says something like 'The Owls, The Reds, The Rovers, The Blades, The Millers, The Spirites' and I can't help but think that it's a bit poor that everyone else uses a proper nickname and we ignore ours and the name of our mascot and simply refer to ourselves by the colour of the tshirt we wear.
We're the reds. I dont know any Barnsley fans who refer to the team as the tykes. I know a few lads from the midlands and down south however who all refer to us as the tykes.
'Cooome ooooon yooou tykes' 'For when the tykes go marching in' Don't really have the same ring to it.
We've always been known as both. No point in re-writing history now, unless you support MK Dons or Young Nudger.
We're also The Tykes though. Hence Toby Tyke and the link was there with the old badge. Tykes fans is more original because of Man Utd and all that shower
The media / PR department call us The Tykes. To fans we are The Reds. Many years ago we were also called The Colliers and, in recent years, 'Tarn' has crept in (probably inspired by Newcastle's Toon).
Neither. We are the Tarn. And Mansford should be all over it. Tykes is a Yorkshire thing and Reds is too generic.
I've never heard "Come on you Tykes" sung at Oakwell. So I guess it has to be "The Reds" But I do like "The Tykes" personally, its totally unique to us.
I prefer The Tykes & The Yorkshire rose badge, but in resent years both seem to have been phased out, shame really, as The Reds could be any team that plays in red, and our badge is identified more as a council badge then a football badge. Branding/marketing at our club is shocking at the side of most clubs in our area we've been left behind by just about every club in Yorkshire when it comes to this, but we've been promised change in the last few month, due to the change at board level, so hopefully we'll catch up with the likes of Rotherham United, Sheffield FC, Frickley, & Athersley Recreation, in not too distant future, and be on a par with the Huddersfields, & Wednesdays of this world as soon as possible
Re: I've never heard "Come on you Tykes" sung at Oakwell. Have you ever heard Leeds sing "come on you Peacocks" or Preston sing "Come on you Lillywhites" or Sunderland sing "Come on you Black cats" or Newcastle sing "Come on you Magpies" or Man United ever mention the "Red Devils" or Norwich sing about Canaries or Cardiff Bluebirds. They're all nicknames - ours is the Tykes. Red is just the colour of the shirt hence "Come on you Yellows, come on you whites, come on you blues" etc.
