Anyone use Churchfields Vets in town?

Took the Robster in for a blood test on Friday, as I suspect he has hyper-thyroid. Not un-common in ageing Cairn Terriers. £137, thank you very much. I also had to take a urine sample and now they've asked for another to send away and no doubt will charge for that too. This is before any definite results or treatment. Are they taking the piss? Literally?

Ours have been going there some years too and dogs we had before. I wasn't too impressed with the vet he saw on this occasion, but I've no real reason to doubt the quality of service they provide. It is the cost of a pre-treatment blood test for an animal they found to be in good general health and the need to send his blood to several different places for testing. Am I just being a skinflint, or is this smelling a bit of sharp practice?

Which vet did you see? Do you have any medical training to say that these tests aren't required or are you just taking a cheap shot at them? Perhaps it would have been a better idea to ask them rather than post it on a football forum.

Average cost for a blood test for dogs is £128, then you've got consulting fees on top of that.

Do you have any Pet Insurance, mate?
I'd suggest you raise the concerns you have with them.

Been going 10 years with my dog. Superb with us prices no dearer than anywhere else. Vets always pleasant and you can tell they enjoy doing it

Always taken my dog to Richmonds at Dewsbury, ok I've to drive from tarn but still works out a lot cheaper than tarn vets. Annual inoculations £12. When I had her spayed, cheapest in tarn was about £100, Richmond charged £45.

 

I used Churchfields for years but after a bad experience with a misdiagnosis which resulted in my cats death I won't go near the place again. I used to sing their praises from the rooftops. I paid out just short of a grand for treatment that was never going to work and put my cat through unnecessary suffering. I took her for a second opinion at Vets4Pets and they did an heart echo and found a tumour and said there was nothing more that could be done. It still upsets me to think of the pain she went through having fluid drained from her heart when it was not necessary as it wasn't helping her condition in any way.

I suppose people have bad stories about every vets practice if you ask but as this happened to my cat I feel very strongly about it.

I do find vets4pets cheaper and Peter the best vet I've ever seen. He explains everything thoroughly about treatment needed and why and the cost.

 

8 years to become a vet. 4 at Uni and 4 at Vet school. You want it for a fiver?

 

Animal care costs more than human care. Find vets charge what they want, and because its your pet they know you will pay it. Pet insurance is a rip off. Most things you claim for they will not pay out, they just say it is heredity.

 

No I don't expect treatment for £5 but after 4years at uni and 4 at vets school after £1,000 worth of treatment I would expect a correct diagnosis.

 

The Cairn is my Mam's dog and I'm worried how much it might cost. She's on a widow's pension and it is a concern that these things are adding up, before we even get to the treatment. We provided a full phial urine sample and now they want another to send away. It set an alarm bells off, that's all and I basically asked if I should be concerned.

After my bad experience I too am a little more weary. That's why I like Peter at vets4pets as he explains why tests need doing, the cost and resulting potential treatments or further possible tests that may be needed. If you're feeling concerned I would speak to them and ask further questions as to why they need two urine tests.

I love Cairn Terriers. I've just got a rescue puppy his Mums was a Jack Russell and his Dad was a border terrier crossed with a bassett hound, he's so cute Mr C!! The cats not very impressed though

I assume you'll post on here if they don't charge you more for the extra urine sample? If they do charge you extra and there's something up then I'll admit I'm wrong and apologise. That's only fair isn't it?
