Sometimes (well, most nights), just as as I am about to fall sleep, my body experiences what feels like an electric shock, I jump out my skin, wide awake, heart racing, out of breath etc. On other occasions our lass says I don't wake up but start 'jumping' severely (she says sometimes she has to pin me down until I fall asleep), sometimes full body 'jumps' off the bed or on one occasion it was a full leg muscle contraction right into her shins.

Happened about an hour ago when I was having a power nap, just about to drift off, bang, wide awake, heart racing. Start again.

Its been happening for a few months now, told me to go to the doctors but I think i've diagnosed it myself with Google. It could be something called Hypnic Jerk, nothing serious, maybe stress related, but could indicate an underlying health issue if 'severe'. Should survive.

Anyone else suffer from something similar or any other sleep disorders?

Brother in law had the same but had an operation a couple of years ago to sort it

I have restless leg syndrome, suffered from it for 20+ years until I had it diagnosed last year. Now take ropinerole on a night before bed and no problems

Yep I'm terrible and have the same condition and much more besides. It's neurological, to do with electrical impulses in the brain misfiring. There was a thread about it a few months back, I listed my ailments. I have RLS too, that comes and goes.

It may be stress/caffeine related. Chill out more, don't worry about things too much. I'm suffering with anxiety at the minute. Isn't pleasant. Completely stopped drinking tea, coffee and alcohol. I drink chamomile tea before bed and it works wonders. Kalms work too

When I'm about to drop off my legs will suddenly spontaneously jerk/kick out.

Sounds very much what I experience, not all the time but I seem to perform the same things as you have described. There's been odd time when my hearts been beating that fast that its scared me. I often wake up not knowing where I am whilst dreaming and end up jumping out of bed, does the wife's bulb in.

    cheers for the tips/insight

Think I may have discovered the reason. Hypnic jerks arose as a protective measure in the distant past when we were tree dwelling, and that it was to ensure that we were not at risk of falling out of the tree as we slept. While relaxing as we fall asleep, our brain gets confused and thinks we are falling out of the tree. So it sends signals to the arms and legs to move to an upright position, resulting in the jerking sensation.

So, my body doesn't think its lying on a bed, in a bedroom, in a house, it thinks i'm pissing about as a caveman, nodding off up some tree. How useful.

It's funny you should bring this up, it's one of those things I've experienced on the odd occasion but never really thought too much about it. It always seems to be when I fall asleep somewhere other than in bed, like on the sofa or on a patio chair where I'm not fully laid down.

The one thing I get in bed is that feeling like you're falling thing but I gather that is pretty common.

you've just missed your slot thats all

or at least thats how i see it when its happened to me in the past! :)

I sometimes have a torrid time during the night. If i am stressed or a lot on my mind i do a lot of jumping out of bed still fast asleep and doing crazy stuff, talking to people not there and seeing things. Funny in a way but can feel a bit knackered when it goes on for a few nights on the trot. I can remember most of it next day as well. Well weird.

I stopped with coffee after lunch and it helped a bit but now its just when my minds doing overtime i think like at the moment with the wedding coming up. Dont feel that stressed but subconsciously i probably am.

I get a small shock sometimes as I am about to drop off. Just roll over and go to sleep then. Try not to worry about Scott Wiseman or stuff.

Always been lead to believe the operation to cure sleep apnea doesn't work. I don't have it but the missus does.

But the dangers of the operation is always a last resort and no many docs will do it. The op causes Sheffield Wednesday snoring too.

I have just been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I have a cpap machine where you wear a face mask and oxygen it fed into to you as you sleep/breathe.

Since i started using(last week). My acid reflux problems have gone. But i dont half look like a tool in bed. A cross between Darth Vader and a Fighter pilot.
