Agree he faded a little. But to say he was anonymous? He set up the goal and then was subbed about 8 minutes later..

How do you know he can't play 90 mins? he gets subbed on the hour every week. Conjecture. Tell you who can't play 90 mins, Dawson. Fact.

Agree. I thought Mellis did ok, but he is frustrating when he sometimes disapears in games & should offer more, but his cross was excellent. Bringing Digby on meant our midfield was way too deep for our strikers to link up with them. It should have been Cwyka on, for that bit of energy and creativity.

Still, a better performance by a mile than the previous 2.

agree.. Alot better than previous games. Not every team starts the season really well. Remember last season when Middlesbrough started the season on fire then were awful 2nd half off the season

I can believe what I actually read on here sometimes. Yes Mellis was poor early on but actually started running the game when Etuhu came on and started winning the ball in midfield. The game was lost today because of Flitcrofts negative substitution trying to maintain a 2-0 lead against a side that had been there for the taking all afternoon.

    Gudge - 100% agreed

Reds today were let down by shocking finishing, which would and should, have put the game beyond doubt.

Whats happened with the positive Flicker taking the game to the opposition but now seems to have turned ultra negative all of a sudden.

So you were home listening to the commentary while Dawson was running round like this headless chicken you were on about?

The same Mellis that scored in the 90th minute at Hillsborough recently?

Watching Flicker and Mellis as he was subbed, my first thought was he thinks the match was won and he was giving the young un some game time.

It was an error, Jacob was taking two or three players out of the game and to be fair he was frustrated most of the time, but he'd better get used to it. The cross for the second goal was sublime. Kelvin was in the Yaya role, keeping things tight and providing some decent distribution. Daws roved around putting out fires and generally keeping us on the front foot. Great moment too first half, when Big Jean was caught out of position and Daws instinctively dropped to centre-half, the attack came to nothing but it didn't go un-noticed by those with a bit more football nouse than the 'he just runs around a lot' crew.

Massively disappointed not to win, but I think we all know why, Flicker too. I've seen enough to know we're going to be a competitive team for the whole season, not just half.

Taking Mellis and Dagnall off - both of which are getting criticised on here - cost us badly. They are our forward movement. The two players that try and show for the ball. Once they'd gone, particularly Mellis, we lost all creativity, isolated the strikers, and we were just sitting ducks.

That negative change definitely cost us today - if he thought Mellis was poor (which he wasn't) then he should have brought Cywka on in the same position.

He's learned to play 3-5-2 again and much improved the performance today. Stick with it and learn from today's defensive change. Keep the faith.

Digby was primed to come on a good 10 minutes before he did. Theoretically, he should have shorn up the areas that the goals actually stemmed from and helped see the game out. problem was, subbing Mellis let his two markers into the match. Dawson had a very good game, but he was the spare midfielder on ball searching duty and should have been the one to come off.

Our midfield were dominating them and we were on almost constant attack. Charlton looked well beaten. Putting Digby on killed our forward momentum taking the pressure off Charlton. A massive clanger from Flitcroft and I hope he has learned from it.

But the positives are our climb up the league has started and the Wendies are hovering above the bottom 3.

Agreed, substitutions (apart from Perkins /Etuhu which was a necessity) were poor.

Mellis was taking 2 players out of the game, in advanced positions, which was allowing REDS to play in Charlton's half. Bringing Dibgy on, created more space for Charlton.......and they attacked us more.

Dagnall is never going to weigh in with loads of goals, but his work rate and closing down of defenders is superb. We all know Scotland is simply a finisher. Again, this created more space for Charlton.

    Flicker got the substitutions wrong.

Talking to 2 Charlton fans on train and they said they "got out of jail today".
