I am in the very fortunate position of taking early retirement (I'm 57) and today is my last day at work.

1978-1982 - Pye Unicam, Cambridge (Infra-Red Spectrophotometer Specialist)
1984-1990 - Coal Board, Bretby (software developer)
1990-Today - Jaguar Cars/Jaguar Land Rover (software developer)

    Getting quite emotional.....

oh aye I would as well. I'd be so emotional the tears would be running down my legs ! ;)

I've been working for 38 years... I'm afraid I'll see a minimum of 50 before I can say the same.

    Good luck though Brush !

I think my best single achievement would be developing and installing (almost single-handedly) the vehicle scheduling application/hardware at Halewood for the X-Type project.

One other notable was going to Tallahassee, Florida in 1980 at the tender age of 24 to give a lecture to Forensic Scientists on the use of Infra-Red in the analysis of human hair (amongst other things). I was given a hard time in a seminar by a shrewd old chap and was starting to hate the old git, however, that night there was a bit of a party and when I walked in this old lad made a bee-line for me and thought "oh sh*t, here we go again", but he thrust his hand out and apologised saying that it was his job to give me a grilling and that I'd convinced him that he should buy a machine...

Any reason why you moved away from your specialism in infra-red in to software development?

Feel free to ignore me for being a nosey bleeder, but you've clearly had a good career and it's very interesting.

congratulations - I hope you really enjoy many years of hard work now you are retired. I know quite a few retired people who dont know how they ever found time to go to work they have so much to do these days

Do you have any plans how to spend your time or are you going to play it by ear as you go along.

All the very best on your retirement, Brush.

No doubt you'll keep your mind active.

We just missed each other in Cambridge, as you left just before I got here!

It must feel good to reflect on a career where you have made a good and positive contribution during your stint at the grindstone.
