Sounds like the club won't be getting a cut of the transfer as Middlesborough paid Norwich less than we received for him. :(

By all accounts Norwich just wanted to get rid.

it'll be made up with add ons then, so we've been shafted again, nice one.

so sell on was % of profit not % of any future fee? Can't remember but were the sell on fees we have paid recently the same deal?

Sounds like it was Norwich that got shafted, not us. We got a decent sum for a player who never played and eventually got moved on for less than we got.

They all are. You only ever get a percentage of the profit in a sell-on clause.

Best bet for all parties would have been if he'd stayed with us. I remember quite a number of people writing that at the time.

Still think he's a very good player at this level.

Totally agree. In football terms, bad move for him, bad move for Barnsley, bad move for Norwich. Would rather have kept him.

In financial terms, good move for him, decent for us (although I don't know the exact figure), big loss for Norwich in transfer fee and wages for a player who never played.

Bad news but after his time at Norwich I never expected a penny anyway.

Pretty much sums it up that.

I wonder what Butterfield thinks about it? I'm pretty sure we would have offered him a very decent contract, probably making him one of the highest earners at the club. We all know we don't offer the biggest contracts, but even on a Barnsley wage he would have been able to afford whatever car he fancied, his own place, as many clothes as he had time to buy, a night out whenever he fancied, dinner at Nando's every night and whatever foreign holiday he fancied in the summer. Assuming he's got mates outside of football he would probably be earning 10 times what they were getting (at least).

He moves to Norwich, he's now earning 20 times what his mates earn. Does that mean he can buy more stuff? Not really, he could buy all the stuff he ever wanted if he'd stayed at Barnsley. He's moved away from his mates, he's no longer the star attraction at the club and he's not playing football. A lot of time to spend at home counting his money I suppose, but I'm sure that gets old after about 10 minutes. What's he going to do for the rest of the year?

I think sometimes these young lads see the figures written down on a piece of paper and are completely wowed by them without really thinking about how that money will improve their life. You can buy your mum and dad a house and I'm sure the thought of doing that is very appealing, but if you're good enough you'll be able to do that in a few years anyway. Why not continue to develop with the coaches that have brought you on this far, continue to play regular first team football, bask in the glory of being the star of the show and being idolised by the fans and spend a couple more years with your mates when you've got money in your pocket and you're still young enough to enjoy it. Move away when you're a couple of years older, a better player and are much more likely to walk straight in to the first team of the bigger club you have joined.

Wouldn't surprise me if Boro bid more than they got him for and Norwich told them they can have him for less than they offered so they come out of the deal with more money by not having to pay us anything.

Deary me. We'd get a percentage of any Profit Norwich made. Not all of it and some of the original price to boot.

I do agree with that mate to a certain degree, but I don't doubt for a minute that he went because he thought he was going to well and play every week in the Premier League. I think the draw is the Prem and then the money that comes with it, rather than the other way around.

I don't know the exact figures, but I guess the difference in wages in what he would have earned here, and what he actually earned at Norwich, would be "life changing".

I would think he has probably banked half a million extra in wages, which has set up him for life.

Given his knee injury, there was no guarantee he would ever get the chance of a big money move again if he stayed with us, and the chance to play in the Premiership.

I can't really blame him for taking the opportunity when it was offered.

That just wouldn't happen because we would only get a small percentage of any profit.

You've not thought that through have you mate? Can't work mathematically. Say we sold him for £100 and we get a % of any sell-on (50% for arguments sake) . They sell him for £100, we get nowt - they get £100. They sell him for £101, we get 50p they get £100.50. The higher the figures the bigger the discrepancy. Ne'er mind
