They have so I've come on here to find some suggestions of how it should be done. I'll then do completely the opposite.
But wont there be quite a lot of people who were driving perfectly safely and stopped without hitting the vehicles in front only to be rammed from behind straight into the rest of the pile? It would be grossly unfair (and a little illegal maybe?) to put them down as 50% at fault when they werent.
negligible really, in the grand scheme of things. all the insurers will just carve the total claim up between them. might apportion it, so some insurer's take a bigger hit than others. but pretty much. would cost more to investigate 100+ claims and counter claims, than to just take it on the chin and settle
The insurance companies won't care, they will just rake it all back by increasing everybodies premiums even if you've never had an accident.
And the vast numbers people making opportunistic whiplash claims out of it won't care about anyone else's premiums either. Only whingeing about "rip off insurance companies" when their premiums go up.
Knew this would inevitably turn into a discussion about opportunistic whiplash claim, it's one of the things that really riles me, about half the people I know have had some sort of pay out from an insurance company after having a minor bump in a car...it's disgusting. All it's done is make driving unaffordable for loads of people due to the insurance costs, mine has only just got to a level where I don't complain about it, it's just short of £400 a year which I don't think is too bad for peace of mind but young 'ens and new drivers having to pay getting on for £2000+ is ridiculous - all these people are doing is subsidising the whiplash claims...and those who have claimed only lose it all again through premiums which would be lower if we didn't have this culture. What happened to just having an accident and getting on with it?
As soon as I saw the news report on the BBC I immediately started writing the Daily Mash headline - 2,439 claim for whiplash after 100 car pile up. Mrs Jenkinson from Folkestone who had 17 family members, and the man from the corner shop in the back of her mini.... etc etc. Oh and cue the "reduce the speed limit" knee jerk reactions from the other set of idiots .....
That's probably not far from the truth. The whole thing angered me through the fact that this was no doubt caused by a few people's poor standard of driving as well though and probably caused by one or two initial incidents. Apparently hardly anyone had their fog lamps on - which is amazing because in Barnsley there only has to be a slight mist and people have them straight on. The only time I've driven in some properly thick fog was going over the tops on the M62 a few years ago - you could only see the fog lamp of the car in front when you were about 40 feet away and everyone was crawling along at a sensible pace, as far as I know there were no accidents although some people resorted to pulling over to the hard shoulder rather than drive in it which I thought was more dangerous than plodding on as the last thing you expect on a freely moving motorway is a stationary vehicle.
