a mates got sky and was telling me he was interested in getting multi room, ive told him there may be a cheaper option of getting multi room by buying a device instead of paying sky for it. does anyone if there is one.

I haven't got multiroom but, if sky install multi room you can watch a different channel to those watching in another room, if you get a signal sender. You have to watch the same channel as everybody else in the house.

Its all down to the feed from the sky dish (I think) not anything to do with the signal. But don't take me at 100% right on that.

stream it with sky go, loads of devices inc xbox/pc, granted you don't get the full tv and record function, but if its just to watch the odd game or program its fine.

also if he does go with multiroom, he must have both boxes connected to landline, which did naff my broadband up

You're probably thinking of a video sender which isn't really multiroom as you have to watch the same channel as the other box.

Either on about that or some of the 'grey market' products which will decode the encrypted Sky channels, you don't even need a subscription with Sky to be honest but as with this kind of stuff it is technically stealing, isn't particularly reliable, and it tends to be available through "someone who knows someone" etc. I've heard people say in the early 90's less than half of the people who had Sky actually paid for it as the decoder cards were readily available, £50 tended to get you about a years viewing but Sky updated all their equipment and the encryption system stayed pretty solid until the last few years...it seems anyone can break any encryption if they really want to.

This is essentially what brought ON Digital / ITV Digital down and caused Barnsley to go into administration as their encryption was so easy for people who knew what they were doing to break - again meaning in the early 2000s there were hundreds of thousands of people getting Sky Sports etc for nothing. I suspect the next challenge for people like Sky will be stopping the rise of their channels becoming freely available over the internet, it's only really the tech-savvy who know how exploit this at the moment but as with anything it becomes easy to use and once enough people know how to do it the more that knowledge filters through to the rest of the population.

I don't condone this sort of activity but I've played around with the add-ons you can get for XBMC and it literally gives you immediate access to all the premium Sports channels in the UK and the picture quality is more than adequate.

    [Digressed slightly there!]
