Than Tommy Poles effort yesterday...? I'd put forward the Grant McCann efforts at Soton, but I can't find any footage unfortunately. Any other suggestions?
Trippiers was good a few year back , but can't remember any as good as yesterday's since Barnard years ago
Barnard v Spurs in cup? But Cykwa's is well up there. Mellis against Rotherham was quality, shame the freindly occasion wasn't worth the goal.
It was a top free kick but the balls they use these days make it easier to do, ian banks cracked his in with a proper football
If we're choosing players, give me mark 1 Ian Banks over Thomas Cywka every day of the week. If I had a choice who was going to take our next free kick I'd pick Banks over Cywka every time. Banksy did it regularly, I believe that was Cywka's first from a free kick. I do take your point about the different footballs, but as far as spectacular one offs go, for me that freekick yesterday was the best I've seen.
Ally Miller notched two as described above, against Port Vale, Boxing Day, late 70s. Would have been a hat trick of photocopy free kicks but for the woodwork. Banksy was guaranteed to score several howitzers a season.
Two that stick in my mind, Steve Agnew at Leicester. Laser beam through the eye of a needle into the top corner. Also, Scott Jones from 175 yards out in about 97 or 98. No idea who it was against and we didn't actually score direct, but from the rebound. I thought it was a goal kick at first, it was that far out. Have to say though I think Tompole's was about the best, of its type. Alistair Millar took some beauties but they were curling chips and pokes, rather than piledrivers.
Didn't Clarkey get a hat-trick that day? 6-2 win? Apart from a few cold Tuesday nights in the press box, that's the first and only time I've sat in the West Upper in forty years or so.
