He did, yes That was the first home game (after watching Barnsley for just over a decade at the time) where I'd seen us score six goals in one match. I can remember being disgusted by some of our fans who were grumbling & complaining that we'd conceded two goals. The more things alter, the more things stay the same.
Re: He did, yes I'd go with Ian Banks, just because he was pretty consistent at it, was almost as good as us getting a penalty whenever we had a free kick just outside the area.
It's certainly The most spectacular free kick we've scored from in years. As others have said, the likes of Ian Banks & Alistair Millar (whose execution of a dead ball situation was in a different style) did it consistently over a period of time. However, that shouldn't distract over what was a truly wonderful goal.
I wasnt at the game so only saw it on the TV but it was definitely as clean a strike as I have ever seen from a Barnsley player. Hard to say whether its better than some of the ones from Banks but certainly in the same category. The difference as Jay points out is that Banks did it regularly and also was one of the best passers we have ever had. If we could have a 21 year old Banks back I would be a very happy fan.
I also remember the likes of Ali Millar & Ian Banks scoring almost every time we had a free kick just outside the box. Three that I remember: Another Banksy special last minute in a cup tie (v Cardiff I think) in the ponty end to win 3-2 after we had been leading 2-0 Ali Millar curling one in v Donny away and also didn't he also curl one in the aforementioned 6-2 win with the outside of his boot?
Bobby or Mellis in pre season? McCann's were pretty special, especially to do 2 in a game like that. Banks could hammer a ball too. Tompoles was quality though, all down to personal preference i suppose.
I concur. That was an absolute belter. Similar distance out to Cywka, but on an angle and right into the top corner past Kirkland.
Scott Jones at the Reebok, 1998 ish? That was a bullet. He scored a similar one at Stockport, too. Darren Barnard at West Brom. Beckham-esque. But having had a reight good think back, I can't think of any better than Tommy Poles on Saturday. The McCann brace at Soton were on a par though.
