Part of a struggling championship defence for seasons, gets released, can only find himself a division three club, few weeks later gets released. Surely you don't think we should bring him back.....

Foster and Hassel wouldn't be shipping all these goals and that's a fact!

Got to bring bobby back in , he is still our most consistent defender , and his knowledge and experience is needed to shore the defence up

Should have been retained instead of McNulty in my opinion, maybe McNulty was the cheaper option though wages wise.

Rubbish. Watford would have run rings around both of them. They both have the pace of a snail. A very slow snail at that.

In the grand manner of something being greater than the sum of its parts, yadda yadda..... We had a side that were galvanised and playing good football. Not the best individuals, by any stretch, but a TEAM, working hard for each other and punching above their weight. Obviously, then, the logical thing to do was rip the heart out of it by letting Foster and Harewood go and treating Hassell like a leper. 'Kin genius. We now have some good parts, but not necessarily all from the same kit.

    Career[edit source]

Born in Warrington, Cheshire, Foster signed for local club Crewe Alexandra as a trainee in August 1997 and made his debut on the 22nd of that month in Crewe's 1–0 loss to Bury. He made a second appearance in the same season a months later in Crewe's 1–1 draw with Bristol City. Foster however did not play any first team games for Crewe during the next season. A season on and Foster scored his first goal for Crewe in their 2–2 draw with Bury, the goal came in the 84th minute, Mark Rivers scoring the other goal for Crewe two minutes after Foster's goal. It took four seasons before Foster was received his first red card, which he received in Crewe's 2–1 loss at Gresty Road against Oldham Athletic.

After Crewe's relegation from The Championship in the 2005–06 season, Foster, who was out of contract, decided to turn down a new offer by Crewe in favour of joining Championship side Burnley on a free transfer. He spent his first season at Burnley mainly as a squad player or substitute and started the 2007–08 season in similar vein. In August 2007 Foster was transferred to Barnsley for the sum of £100,000 where he signed a two-year contract.[2] He was a long term target for Barnsley[2] and they had been trying to sign the player throughout the summer.[3]

Foster made a positive start to his Barnsley career, enjoying a regular run in the team at right-back. Since his signing, Foster became a valued member of the Barnsley first team squad. His time at Barnsley so far has had one notable setback which came in the form of a sending off for two bookable offences during the 3–3 draw between Barnsley and Stoke at Oakwell on Boxing Day 2007. Two major high points have come in the FA Cup for Foster with him grabbing an equaliser for Barnsley twice in three separate games. First of all came a back heeled goal against Blackpool at Oakwell in the 3rd round, and secondly came a headed goal from Martin Devaney's cross against Liverpool at Anfield in a 5th round match that Barnsley went on to win 2–1.

He bagged his first league goal for Barnsley at Watford in a 3–0 win, heading home Diego León's corner.

Foster was named Barnsley's player of the season in his first year at the club. This honour was voted for by the fans, he beat club captain, Brian Howard, and winger, Jamal Campbell-Ryce into second and third place respectively.

At the start of the 2010/11 season, the captaincy was passed to new signing Jason Shackell, to enable Foster to concentrate on his own game.

Defender Stephen Foster joined Tranmere in June on a two-year deal, but Rovers have confirmed that player and club have already agreed to part company. The 32-year-old's contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

    You're welcome

People talk about Foster and Hassell lacking pace but Ramage is absolutely no better on that front.

I don't think we single anyone out today - they were all *****.

I really think that the problem is in mid field.

Not just Watford though is it ? We are getting a new one ripped week in, week out. Experienced players are what is required for me. Remember what players got us to the premiership ?

Foster was less effective last season than previously, so was on the decline.

The decision to release him was the right one, much as I liked him.

If Foz and Bobby are snail paced, legs gone, not good enough etc, then why is it that we are now defensively worse than at any point since regaining our second tier status?

    Mere coincidence is it?

Both are solid, experienced, and CONSISTENT defenders. Never had two or three consecutive bad games.

At the minute, Kennedy/Ramage/Cranie/Wiseman are on their third consecutive bad performances.

It's easy to write someone off though (Bobby) without the opportunity to be proven wrong.

I remember the same posts last season before injuries led to his recall out from the cold.

    "He's too slow"

    "Too old"

    "Legs gone"

We then went on the run that saved us.

We beat todays opponents 1-0 last season. Bobby came on after 5 minutes and gave a defensive masterclass. And scored the winner.

    Short memories some of you.

I'm sorry, but as much as he was a nice bloke, he wasn't a particularly good player. He could go a whole season being mediocre. Wish he would have been better (because he was a nice bloke) but he wasn't really good enough.

We have much better players at the club now. It's just the matter of getting them to play like they are.

I know foster wasn't great but I dont think any of the players we have brought in are any better than him.

I could understand letting him go to free up wages and I agree he needed replacing, but surly it should have been for better quality not similar or less
