Like many others on this BBS I think we already had too many players. With Dawson, Etuhu, Pekins, Mellis and Digby I think we had plenty of central midfield players. But to be fair to Flicker, he didn't sign any of them. Contract extensions may have been offered, but he hasn't gone out and picked up a central midfielder he really wanted. Until now at any rate. I don't think we can complain that any of the above were offered contract extensions either after their performances last season. I can't remember anyone in the summer wanting any of that lot out. A number of times I read we had the best midfield in the division! None of them are playing anywhere near what they're capable of this season, so now is probably the right time to bring in a replacement. Maybe, with the way they were performing, Flicker didn't trust them to hold the midfield in ones and twos and that's why we've seen three of them in the team. Odd logic I grant you, but it's possible. Maybe with a midfield player he can really trust to anchor the midfield we''ll see more appearances from our flair players like Jennings, Cywka, McCourt and Mellis. Maybe not, but it's a theory. But we must reduce the squad size in January. I find it difficult to believe the wage bill hasn't gone back up to unsustainable levels. My main worry is that for every good loan signing we bring in (Chris O'Grady) we sign 10 terrible players (write your own list as long as your arm). I really hope this one works because I'm desperate for my team to do well and I want Flicker to succeed.
I remember those best midfield in the league days. Always made me smile. I imagine Fox will be Flitcroft's handbrake. He's got a good pedigree but so has Ramage. We've now got a 'spine' of the fabled Championship quality players in Butland Cranie/Ramage Fox & O'Grady. Let's see what happens.
Add to that Mellis, Cywka, Pedersen, RNL, Nyatanga and Scotland and we have a good group of naturally gifted championship players there. As well as Mccourt and Jennings who are looking to prove themselves.
yep. all we have to do now, is settle on a formation and play them in their right positions. all seems straight forward enough
Re: Lets hope he doesnt spoilt it at right back Butland. Wiseman. Crainie. Ramage. TK Daws. Fox. Kelv. Perks. Cog. Scotland.
Re: Lets hope he doesnt spoilt it at right back you're suggesting 4-4-2, with daws and perks out wide? really? like, really really??
Re: Lets hope he doesnt spoilt it at right back It. Is. What. I. Think. Flicker. May. Select. Slightly. Tongue. In. Cheek.
Listening to his 19 minute interview on audioboo I think there's a definate change in his attitude, I get the impression it has been reiterated to him that just surviving isnt good enough and he has to deliver a team capable of getting further up the league. Consequently, he's having to face up to the fact that some of the players who have come up from League 1 have reached their peak and arent going to be able to achieve this. I can see the likes of Perkins, Dawson, Dagnall, McNulty, Wiseman being replaced and shipped out and Im encouraged by what he's said, lets see if he's good to his word. He certainly cannot complain about the backing he's had, thats for sure.
Re: Lets hope he doesnt spoilt it at right back That's Flicker's Plan B, right there. 4 defensive midfielders and 4 defenders. Prem keeper. He's buzzing. Come at us. Bench: RNL, McCourt, Mellis, Dagnall, Cywka 2 of these when we go 1-0 down.
Re: Listening to his 19 minute interview on audioboo "People round that table who wanted Barnsley to win games" He's bin teld
Re: Listening to his 19 minute interview on audioboo It breaks my heart to agree RE Dawson & Dagnall but disagree massively RE Perkins. He's been poor but the one that has the ability for this level.
Re: Lets hope he doesnt spoilt it at right back Seriously though. 442 with Perks and Daws out wide?!!
