They aren't the same, but if you're happy someone died, then you don't have the right to get uptight about what the Daily Mail did. 2 sides to the same coin in my opinion. Both have no place in a civilised society.

    Speaking in general terms there.

True, but weren't the Daily Mail the ones that were up in arms about this saying you should respect the dead? So for them then to go on and do this hatchet job shows them up as pure hypocrites.

It occurs to me from the tone of last night's question time that the current generation of Tories are Thatcher's children grown to maturity. Uber capitalist and uber arrogant about it.
The Mail was wrong as it usually is, because it sees nothing objectively and always looks for a royal blue angle. Wouldn't they love a McCartheyist unbritish activities commission where you could go to jail for being a socialist? They've already said that Ralph Milliband left a legacy of evil just because he wasn't a capitalist.
As far as Millibands energy freeze goes, it's unrealistic in a capitalist society and we all know that the only way to control big energy, big water, big railways is to nationalise them and he won't do that because we can't afford it and the Tories would just give it back to the fat cats when they get in anyway.
Posing as a socialist isn't the same as being one. They are as bad as each other and they deserve each other.

Fair point but as you say, very general mate.

The argument is that Margaret Thatcher was a public figure who made decisions that had significantly negative impacts on many people's lives. They 'hated' her because of her actions. They made up their own opinions, however extreme or disagreeable.

If a paper had attached Thatcher's late father then that would have been wrong, too. In my opinion like.

I didn't like Margaret Thatcher. I didn't like her politics even more. But I agree with you, I thought some behaviour by some people during the time of her death went too far.

I'm willing to discuss that topic with anyone and should you wish to start a thread on the subject I'd back you up even though our political ideologies differ and even though I'd more than likely be taking a stance in opposition to people I usually see eye to eye on in a political debate. I'm not sure now is the time, it's not really in the news or what people are talking about, but maybe on the anniversary of her death?

My point is that we should be able to talk about what is happening currently, ie The Daily Mail article, without what has happened in the past being thrown in our faces. The fact that I don't like The Daily Mail article does not mean I danced on Thatcher's grave or agreed with people who did and by moving the discussion in that direction, towards Thatcher or other such left wing offences, we're deflecting away from the issue at hand, which in my opinion is a serious matter.

Let's discuss what left wing politics has got wrong, by all means, but not as a defence for dragging someone's dead father through the dirt. It's no defence at all.

Which constituency will be standing in at the next election. Let me know and I'll register as a voter there and you've got my vote.

Unfortunately you'll get crucified as you are far too sensible and compassionate. I cite the fact that Gove a man who appears to posses neither as my evidence that this is the case.

Bang on - pretty depressing really.

    Couldn't agree more.

I agree - and I don't seek to defend the Daily Mail on this issue - they were wrong - pure and simple.

To be honest the fact that Ralph Miliband is dead isn't the real issue. Just because someone has died doesn't mean they are beyond reproach. It's the fact that the article is a flawed and baseless hatchet job making spurious arguments, taking quotes out of context, and claiming that their idea of Britain is the only one that exists or is relevant. It's awful journalism and it smacks of desperation.

Don't think I've ever defended what they did or justified it. It's abhorrent what they've done. As is celebrating somebody's death. Just how I see things, couldn't give a **** what colour their politics were.

To be fair, it's dead easy to pontificate on here. If everything I ever did or said was a matter of public record, like it is for politicians, instantly available to throw back in my face whenever I change my mind or say/do something contradictory, I'd be hated as much as any of them.

Anyway, we haven't had Red West's response yet, you'll be able to read exactly what kind of git I am when that comes along.

Purely a matter of human common decency. Needs to be examined on its own merits not linking it to anything or anyone else. The Mail hates Britain for once Clegg is right. Would it be right for me to call Lord Rothermere a Nazi sympathiser because his ancestors were. Clearly not but at least I would be accurate in my facts. Appalling factualy incorrect and the owner should sack his editor and unreservedly print an apology.

Bringing peoples reactions to the death of a public figure who was reviled by vast sections of our society and sonehow linking this to the death of a person who conducted his life in private is spurious and misses the point.

I think it's not so much the people themselves (Miliband snr and Thatcher) that are 'now' the issue in the extended debate, it's how others have reacted to things.

Whether that's a diversionary tactic employed by the umbrage ridden right, or whatever I'm not sure, and to be fair, pretty much ****** off with the whole thing.

I like how the Mail's owner demonstrates his patriotism by avoiding tax...

Socialism and Marxism are two very different things and what we never want in this county is a Marxist leader. The Labour politicians have been very clever in diverting attention from the very left wing/Marxist policies of their leader by focusing on the personal assault made on Milliband's father.

I'm interested in which of Milliband's policies you think are Marxist?
