That a Barnsley 'man' who was handed a 12 month prison sentence at the end of march has already been out and re-offending? Why the hell would somebody handed a 12 month sentence be out after 5 or 6 months? And more annoyingly does anybody agree that it is disgusting that after being caught re-offending and committing theft (resulting in the police needing to use the police helicopter at great expense to us all) he has merely been sent back to prison to finish his original sentence without having a single second added on for his latest crime.
Every study shows that prison works and of course it does, if they're in gaol they're not committing offences. We need more prisons and more people need to be locked up, the problem is, it costs money.
He will get recalled to prison and finish the rest of his initial sentence plus any other sentence handed down to him by the courts. The prison system is expensive at over 70k per prisoner per year plus the cost of getting them to prison via the courts is an additional 45k. Their are currently over 80,000 prisoners in the UK and the courts have been told only to send the most serious offenders to prison. We are going to end up with lots of private jails whose philosphy is appeasement and give prisoners computers and phones in their cells, and the reason they do this is because they have less staff than public centre jails. The current government are cutting the staff to a point that it just isn't safe to be on the landings. Check out the facebook page "Know the danger". It has postings by current prison staff showing exactly what is happening in our prisons right now. Sorry for the rant.
I have to question why it supposedly costs that much? If it does then there's obviously some massive waste, as there is with all government departments. If a prison was run by a private enterprise for profit it wouldn't cost anywhere near that.
