The club have been posting some old team photos on Pinterest for anyone who's interested http://www.pinterest.com/pin/359162139004001422/ By we've had some ***** play for us........and some class too
Am I the only one noticing how professional the photographs were in the late 90's? Symmetry, sponsors logo etc. The most professional looks to be the premier season, well put together, even the lucozade bottles are symmetrical and positioned carefully, ORA board proudly on display. Compare that with photos from recent years. Old chair legs visible, players not lined up correctly, balls nowhere to be seen, directors coming and going from photos, bobby hassell traversing all three rows (shouldn't height be used to line players up?) and no sponsors displayed at all. A professional attitude off the pitch breeds a professional attitude on the pitch. It is no coincidence in my opinion that we have settled for dragging our arses over the line on the pitch for the last few years and have settled for dragging our arses over the line off it as well. Thank god for ben mansford.
Let's have a go at some names then: Rimmington, Glavin, Law, McCarthy, Horn, Evans, Pierce, Banks, Parker, possibly Gordon Boyd, Johnny Steele (I hope) Campbell, Birch, Dunno, Walker, Hunter, Chambers, Barrowclough, Joyce, Dunno. The two on the front row I don't know could be Don Souter and Jimmy Mann. But they quite easily couldn't be.
What stands out for me is how many of the young lads never made it..cant even remember half of em's names.
Don Souter is between Derrick Parker & Bobby Collins, Jimmy Mann is next to Joe Joyce. I don't know who is between Birch & Parker.
SHENK.....that team from the early 1980's was top notch (small squad but filled with absolute quality ie. Glavin, McCarthy, Banks, and let's be fair, Phil Chambers was a quality right back, no argument). That photograph fills me with great pride.
I was thinking Tony Cunningham should have been on the team photo, but I can't remember exactly when we bought him, I guess after that photo was taken. Anyway, I looked him up and found this. http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/tony-cunningham-what-happened-next I don't know if it's common knowledge on here, but I didn't know. Well done Tony mate and well done to the PFA for helping out.
Me too. He was a left back. Personally I did think he was great, but he tended to be the one in THE team that a lot seemed to grumble about. Well, him and McHale.
Nice one Tony! Enjoyed watching him at Oakwell......big target man but had some skill and finesse. Nice to see he has a follow-on career.
Probably because the other three defenders in the great early 80s team were so good. McCarthy and Evans were a great pairing and people forget how good Joe Joyce was before his injury. He never recaptured his early form, but when he first broke into the side many were tipping Joyce for higher things. Chambers was okay, but nothing special. In fact, left back has regularly been a problem position for us, so no surprise to see this continues to this day. I recently had to pick my all time eleven for a t-shirt (a friend runs a company making these, so I will be spreading the word once mine arrives this week!) and I really struggled with the left back (before deciding on Neil Thompson), although I also went gung ho and picked four midfielders who would have little intention on defending...
My memory says Phil Chambers was right back and Joe Joyce was left back? Superb era, brings memories flooding back.
Your memory is a mirror image of reality. Which isn't so bad, at least you'll be able to read the writing on the front of ambulances. Although don't try to go back on holiday where you went as a nip. You'll take the wrong turn at every junction. If you're trying to get to Lands End you'll end up in John O'Groats.
All I can remember as a nipper, was McCarthy and Evans as centre backs, with Chambers and Joyce as regular full backs. In fact, I can't recall anyone else playing in the back four?
Neil Cooper filled in for almost every position on the pitch. If anyone got injured, Neil Cooper was your man. Apart from up frong where we had Glyn Riley then Colin Walker. He was a great player was Cooper, who didn't get nearly enough games at Barnsley. We didn't rotate the squad, players didn't miss games with niggles, so we tended to play the same team every week.
