Danny Wilson? The trouble with most folk from Barnsley is they live in the past, of course he did a great job all those years ago but what has he done since? Not to take anything away from his achievement with us, but it was different league back then, it was more of a level playing field in terms of finances, and we struck lucky with the players he signed who were coming to the end of their careers yet they still had a lot of the ability that had seen them play in the top division along with a collection of our own players who were reaching the peak of their ability. All the pieces basically came together for Danny so there was an element of luck there. We had excellent players already in terms of Watson, Eaden, Redfearn and Bullock, along with the experience of Hendrie and Neil Thompson, plus Liddell and Marcelle who were capable of chipping in with a few goals as well. Don't get me wrong if we're out of touch with the sides outside of the relegation places in December then we probably don't have anything to lose by getting another manager in, and every other team in the country would do the same to be honest. It's OK having a long term plan but those plans can't include a relegation, we were lucky to get out of League One last time and I fear we would have a much longer stay there if we end up down there again. Flitcroft needs to go back to the "win or bust" mentality of last season as what we are doing now isn't working at all, we've ground out a couple of wins but neither of those were particularly convincing.
Wilson was interviewed for the Blunts job, abroad, at McCabe's house. He lives next door. Apparently. Keith Hill and Mark Robins were interviewed at the club. Apparently. It was always Wilson's job. No idea whether we approached him before, during or after. Just that we approached Slade and Hill. And that Megson applied for the job when Hill was sacked. I'd take Wilson, Mowbray or Megson if Flicker goes. All proven at this level. All promoted to the Premier League. But I'm Spartacus has already written off two of them. Just waiting for his reasons for both, and for his reasons for Mowbray not being worth a shot.
Luck? No luck in recruiting a young lad from Eastwood Town and turning him into a matchwinner. No luck in recruiting Marcelle from obscurity. Nor in recruiting Thompson, Hendrie, Wilko, Appleby, Barnard, Ward, De Zeeuw, Bosancic etc etc. No way am I suggesting it was "all him" or that he could ever get close to replicating that. But I'm not having him talked down like that MIRACLE achievement was lucky.
"Luck"... All good managers are lucky. Not looking at the past. Wilson's win ratio as a manager would outstrip most potential candidates I would imagine. He's then best candidate of those available to us and a decent fit. I'd rather stick with Flitcroft but if we end up looking round he seems a reasonable option. I'm presuming Steve Davis at Crewe wouldn't be interested as he would be the ideal candidate.
Wouldn't say no to Colin. Watched a documentary on him last night. Was hilarious watching him screeching at Morgan in the dressing room, and blaming Andy Gray for everything.
I think we should stick to our guns a while longer. Better candidates hard to say depends who is available. Steve Davis at Crewe. Holloway.
And Flicker's got us playing like Brazil has he? Seen more hoof this season than we ever did under Robins who was unfairly labelled as direct/boring.
Isn't it like 3 wins in 20 something games? About 18 points from 50 something? I'm not slagging him, btw. Just trying to add to the debate.
That's true. But we do know what Flitcroft could do as he did it... anyway thee and thi mate stop bairnin' like two little kids who've been told they have to wait until Christmas for their presents... and before I get slaughtered for saying that, it is a joke at the expense of my good friend commie boy and his pal !
He's recovered our situation a tad in my opinion. We lost every game in September. In October, we've gained 2 draws, a win and a defeat. A month ago, I said I expected at least 5 points from the next 5 games. We've managed 5 already, with a game to come. So I won't be calling for his head.
What will be will be. I've already accepted going down. Not happy with it but we will do well to stay up now. I know some will say grow a pair but that's just how I see it.
I suggested someone earlier - Danny Wilson. There are plenty of people who folk on here would dismiss but they could turn out to be better than Flircroft. On this season's showing Russell Slade would do a better job.
