have internet providers clamped down on downloading sites

    just tried logging onto the extratorrent and noticed sky have blocked the site and they've listed a load of sites which sky have blocked ie piratebay bitsoup etc.....

    is this just sky or are all internet providers doing this

    yeah seem stuff for years comments about cracking down on people downloading but just seen that from the comments on the sky website that by the looks of it every downloading site is now blocked by sky

    It's basically censorship of the internet under the banner of the protection of intellectual property, but how long will it be before certain news sites or blogs that the government doesn't like the content of end up blocked as well?

    www.hidemyass.com is a useful tool if you are struggling to access any sites due to an ISP block.

    It should be up to the individual whether they want to view the information on an internet site or not, the reason the internet is such a brilliant invention is because there is no-one policing it and anyone can have a presence on it, but it's a slippery slope when the government decide what can and can't be viewed. Some ISPs have said exactly the same which is why on some you can't get anywhere near a torrent site, whilst others have said they have no intention of blocking them.

    It shouldn't be up to someone else to decide whether or not an individual has to pay for the content they're viewing or listening to.

    Its a tricky one though - I have no sympathy for sites that exist purely to allow people to steal digital versions of music and films and in the cases of sites blocked listed on the BBC link above are quite reasonable. The problem is more the slippery slope argument

    Next step blocking access to foreign sites that legitamately have rights to stream sports in their own region but not the rights to show for example football to the UK. Though they may have worldwide rights to show table tennis for example you wouldnt be able to watch that either

    or possibly blocking access to foreign porn sites or blocking access to foreign news sites which are reporting on stories that contravene the official secrets act - there are already books which are published abroad which are banned in the UK

    It may be a completely invalid concern but I do worry a bit that once we start blocking sites that someone doesnt want us to see we need to be careful it doesnt grow into some form of censorship

    not that i would ever openly condone piracy. but, just for the sake of free press and research, there are a million and one proxies out there. for every site that gets blocked, another proxy pops up. and if that fails, there's VPN. very easy to bypass.

    A fun fact is that while illegal, you cannot be prosecuted anymore for the downloading of this stuff. It impedes your human right to gain knowledge and culture according to the European court of human rights.

    Same. People shouldn't be able to steal something off someone for nothing that the person could have spent months or years creating. It's not right. Then again i've never bothered about downloading. I downloaded off Amazon the Killing In The Name song to stop Joe McElderly getting christmas number 1 but that's it. I prefer a CD copy when purchasing an album.
