Very emotional programme. The dignity of work and the respect for workers, lost today in our embrace of consumerism and selfishness. "This Colliery is now managed by The NCB ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE."
You will never get that level of comeradry back, when people stuck together thourgh thick and thin. You only have to look at this forum to see the differences
And the collieries have closed for what reason? We have not replaced it with a reliable replacement.people are freezing to death as we are told we must go green with expensive alternatives, disgusting . we are sitting on all this coal whilst still importing it at astronomical prices without any thought to the poorest in our communities fekin Tories.
It still exists in the Army and I dare say the Navy and Air Force too. It's one of the things I miss most about being in the Army.
Too right, some of them are being treated awfully but to be fair they (and the previous Labour government) do try to look after the troops. Some of the headlines about kit and stuff are sometimes a bit misleading.
quite a few used to come out of the forces into the pit, they reckoned it was the only other place that was owt like for the crack with the lads
if you enjoyed that programme, theres plenty more on bbc archives http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/mining/6914.shtml
just watched a bit of that ''A weekend in the lives of four Yorkshire miners.'' got to say its interesting. Not from Barnsley or even south Yorkshire but its interesting how people lived and that.
you arnt exactly the other side of the world from south Yorkshire are you Hemsworth?,,kingsley drift in your town worked the same seam as highgate in the film.
follow the other links as well mate, some really good mining footage, also go on youtube and search coal mining, coal face, coal face machinery etc....some really good films, much more of an insight than a museum.
