They simply haven't been designed. Or rather, they have been 'created' by anyone who understands the principles of design. Trouble is, anyone who can operate a simple computer programme nowadays considers themselves a graphic designer or 'creative'. Ask them to render something by hand and they would be absolutely buggered. They have no concept of visual construct, principles of typography, selective imagery, optic behaviour, primary and secondary reproduction, mind association - nowt. All the little details and nuances that actually make something work and have appeal as opposed to not working at all. I studied HND Visual Communication at Granville in Sheff we I was a teenager and we had to learn all this stuff. Whoever came up with those badges clearly hasn't. People just throw stuff together on a computer and then wonder why there is so much ***** design around. I could take those designs to bits and tell you exactly why they don't work - why? Because it was drilled into me, back in the days when design was actually taught.
i was just starting to forget about them. this forced me to go back and look at them. now i'm all upset again. they are all truly horrible. i totally support the need for brand revitalisation. i just think the designs are terrible. aesthetically they're awful, and in my opinion they don't respect our heritage. p.s. got the prints. smashing! will prob even get them framed. cheers
I'd like to nominate you MrC to head a design team and come up with a selection. IMO you have all the credentials as your a good drawer have BFC in your heart and soul and understand what us ordinary fans would want in our emblem. The four we have on offer do nothing whatsoever in my opinion to endear me to the new "Brand" Are you up for it could Gally and team help? I for one hope so cos I don't want to be saddled with current offers would much rather stick with what we already have. "HELP!!!!!!!!"
Just to add why all the red in the designs?that's OK for a metal badge or summat but to go on a red shirt will make it almost invisible imo need a distinctive badge to stand out on a red shirt not blend in
I don't think I'm the one to do it. Besides, I'd rather work with Wednesday than BFC. 1887 is written in a type face you would associate with the 1970s and school text books. It's little things like that, obvious stuff.
Maybe you could come up with one of your own with a description of what its all about? If its a good un lets get it thrown into the mix!
The vertical bars remind me of prison, not that I've been - maybe that's current, but we don't mine anymore. If they want to reflect the past, use an old badge. The white rose, is too easily associated with Leeds, it could/should feature but not prominently. And i never like the oak leaf/acorn and the well thing. Barnsley is becoming an education town, maybe that should feature? There is a traditional way of stating that on a crest, by the inverted open book motif. That could form the roof of the badge. Stuff like that, I'm sure everyone has tons of ideas.
That's a good point The main colours are red that'll disappear into the home shirt and clash with the colours of an away shirt and gold which I can't remember ever being associated with Barnsley. My preference of the offered designs would be the bottom right one but what are those stripes that appear in the background of the two circular designs? Do they have significance or are they just filling space? The small oak and well icons on the non-circular badges are too small and fiddly and a large white rose is moving towards the Leeds design. Also, the word "Gerrin!" needs to be worked into the design. Oh, and we need a miner's face in relief on the badge like they have on Collier's cheese.
Totally agree. It has taken me 48 hours to come round after seeing the options. I had real hopes that the club would do this properly and go to a serious brand identity agency. I would love to know which 'agency' has created these. The typography is at best poor. Having worked in the design industry for 25 years I would also say having 3 options that are largely the same idea (white rose as central component) is also an industry no no. I am totally devastated by what I have seen.
Fantastic Media in Leeds. http://www.fantasticmedia.co.uk/ Looks like they just ripped off their OWN logo for option C as well
Oh dear. Just what I feared. A multi disciplinary "media" agency that think they can do anything and everything. Apple Mac generated logos done without careful craft and consideration. The best thing the fans could do would be to vote to stay with the identity that we currently have. At least that way the club will realise that they have made a huge mistake with this one. They should then go and approach one of the top brand identity agencies and not a 'media' company. Check out... http://www.dandad.org/awards/professional/2013 ...for the best guys around.
Oh dear really? Fantastic Media? It's a stitch up - they are one of the stand sponsors at Huddersfield Town. Probably taking the piss. Especially with the Red Rose. The designs are all *****, although I'm still grumpy my proposal for Toby Tyke with massive knackers and the latin for The Dogs ******** underneath never got on the shortlist.
I was thinking we ought to reflect barnsleys modern day industry on the badge rather than the mining stuff, maybe use telephone headset and forklift symbols. The year should 1997.. the year when a lot of our fans finally realised we existed And instead of that Latin crap...a good old Barnsley saying often repeated at oakwell..... Harrr much?
Heh Heh nice one, perhaps someone could mock one up? You'd need to incorporate some Eastern European aspects of life in Barnsley as well, maybe a car wash or leather jacket symbol, and an I-Phone, maybe a person being smuggled underneath a lorry? Modernisation.
I think we should cut to the chase with this rebranding, cos after all we call a spade a spade in Barnsley. So lets just have a badge with a begging bowl on it with the words "gis thee money" inscribed underneath it.. None of this subconcious suggestive imagery crap
The rebranding is required, it just needs done properly. There are a good view exceptional designers working at some of the UK's best design and brand communications agencies that are Barnsley fans. Surely the club should have done its homework and appointed one of them.
