Anyone ever seen a chiropractor for treatment?

I'm one of those glass backed b'stards who everyone hates. We all know back ache doesn't exist and we're all just faking it to claim benefits. As it happens, I don't claim benefits and the surgeon seemed concerned enough to operate on me, but you know, I'm still a fcuker.

I've had loads of physio and I do all the exercises, but it's just getting worse and worse. Feels like someone is constantly twisting a knife in to the top of my back. Only way to get any relief is to put two stone of weight in a back pack and go for a walk. I like going for a walk, I do at least three miles every day, but it's a lot less fun carrying a load of weights on your back. Doing it without isn't an option any more as it hurts too much. So, after running out of options, I was thinking about seeing a chiropractor.

Anyone been? Did it work? Was it a long term solution or just temporary relief? Did it make it worse?

I've been to the one in Dodworth a couple of times and to be honest I thought it was expensive for what it achieved and I stopped going. I had a similar problem, pain in upper back/neck area which meant I couldn't turn my head from side to side fully. Made it impossible to watch tennis. Once I was flying back from Hamburg with a window seat, it was a cloudless day and I was glued to the window watching the view for 90 minutes. Unfortunately on landing my head had got stuck in the "look right" position and I couldn't turn it back to the front. Looked a right prat going through passport control as they thought I was not taking them seriously. Settled down after a couple of days.

Apparently I've got cervical spondylosis which is age related and there's not much that can really be done apart from exercises which my GP gave me, and they do relieve it a bit

I've heard good reports about them from some people but it didn't work for me. From memory just the first appointment and treatment was about £70 but that was years ago and it's probably more now.

I too suffer from back pain - been diagnosed as arthritis in the lower back - I too have never been to a chiropractor and have been wondering if one may help. My pain can vary enormously from day to day - the warm weather seems to make life easier but the dull wet weather can mean a bad day. Walking seems to alleviate the pain, but if I sit down for any length of time getting up again is agony - also can't stand still for any length of time.

I too don't claim any benefits (I think I'd blow a fuse at the ATOS treatment/recommendation they'd make) - some days I can't even get my socks/shoes on.

My medication doesn't seem to work - I'm about to make an appointment with my GP to change medication and ask his advice re chiropractors......

PS - no I wasn't a goalie earlier on in life in a rubbish football team.

That sound about the right price from what I've seen, sometimes more, which is too much for me, but Groupon are offering a deal at a place in Rotherham for £16 which gives you the initial 30 minute consultation and 15 minutes treatment. Would you do it for that much?

I'd certainly do it for that Price. In my opinion it works for some, not for others, but I believe it can't do any harm (famous last words!). If you tried all the other avenues I would certainly give it a go for the price.

I've been to one, and they helped more than any of the docs who I insisted there was nothing wrong, because nothing appeared on an xray.

Sadly, GPs and the like, largely dismiss them as witch doctors.

I would definitely use one again.

Re: Anyone ever seen a chiropractor for treatment?

    Experience varies.
I went to one when my back went and was amazed at the results. (Gareth Rhys in Rotherham, also works on Sheffield Rd in town I believe)
After I moved I couldn't get appointments I could fit round work with the attendant travelling so found one near work. What she did seemed very similar but didn't seem to work at all.

The evidence to support chiropractic really isn't strong but I reached the point where I was willing to try anything and as I say, I was amazed. I have two problems - sciatica and an ache between the shoulder blades. The latter is from work posture and he was clear from the outset that he could only achieve temporary pain relief. The sciatica was so bad 3 years ago I couldn't walk 50 yards. 12 sessions over 9 weeks cost me dear but I was pain free after the prescribed treatments and not a twinge since. That same guy kept my upper back at bay with a singe treatment every 3 months but after I moved, the new one only got me pain free for 48hrs after each treatment so I stopped going.

I used to have a bad back, in the lower regions with pain shooting every where. I tried chiropracter but after a while the treatment stopped working.
Some one suggested Acupuncture. I was very sceptical, but it worked and now no more pain.

If all else fails give it a go.A little painful to start but not as much as the back pain.

Re: Anyone ever seen a chiropractor for treatment?

I see one about every 6 weeks, best thing I ever did I thought I was going to end up having to sit on my arse for a living.
Don't expect a miracle cure in one visit it doesn't work like that.
I would ask around and maybe get a referral from someone you know and maybe look a few up online to see what people are saying
about them. I can't help you as I live just down the road from Calgary Tyke.

For a bit of relief at home you can get a firm foam roller they are about 6" diameter X 2 or 3' long. Just lie on it and use your legs to roll it
over your back. You can also use this to roll out tight muscles in your legs which can also be the cause of hip and back pain through muscle imbalance. Another good one is a football, use that in the same way as a roller down each side of your spine if you hear/feel a few cracks
    it's doing its job.

Re: Anyone ever seen a chiropractor for treatment?

I saw one for a few months this year. The treatments were effective, but they are only worthwhile if you do all the plethora of exercises they give you to do - and keep doing. I don't do them nearly enough, but there are 2-3 that always work to relieve stiffness temporarily that I didn't know before. Overall I now get less pain than before and at least I know how to relieve most symptoms if they start. It is expensive, but luckily I was covered for BUPA care at the time through work so it didn't cost me anything.

Definitely worth buying the Groupon and seeing what you think.

Re: Anyone ever seen a chiropractor for treatment?

Like FreezingTyke, I go to visit a chiropractor every 6 to 8 weeks for "routine maintenance" - my kids go too. It's much more commonly-accepted here, and chiropractors are as common as dentists, so I would say it is quite a bit cheaper here than the amounts you have mentioned, due to the competition I would think.

So, as you might expect, I am big advocate of chiropractic, but I would honestly go to visit one that is recommended to you as opposed to the cheapest (Groupon) option - there are good and not-so-good chiropractors out there.

I first tried a chiropractor in Sheffield many years ago when I found that physio and other exercises just were not working for me - with chiro I've never looked back (well I have, because my neck moves really easily now, tee-hee). So, I would say give it a go - it achieves results that physio alone cannot possibly hope to achieve as it works on spine, structure and alignment, not just the muscles. As someone else said, acupuncture would be another option - my husband has had great results in freeing up his back (it also cured his gout!).

As for relief - certainly if you have spasm, or even more major pain issue, you can get great relief over the course of 2 or 3 visits. Then when you are "mended" I would recommend you revisit every couple of months for "maintenance" as I do. Hope you get your back sorted soon.

Re: Anyone ever seen a chiropractor for treatment?

I used to work at the pit.........and it was not much bigger than a rat ole..........being 6'6" tall in a rat ole dunt help thi posture so consequently I got a bad back.
In fact my back was sort of twisted and I ended up with my belly button being where mi arse ole should have been.
At one bit I was having to use two walking sticks to get around. Xrays showed a worn disc between 4 and 5.
So this guy mentioned going to an Osteopath.........which I did at Wakefield (Cheapside I think?).
I laid on the table and they put me into a position and then jumped on me - the sensation was terrific - all the bones in my back cracked!!!
I then laid facing the ceiling and this woman got my head and twisted it one way and then another - all the bones in my neck cracked.
I walked out of the Osteopath without sticks and I felt I was walking on clouds.
However, the tightness comes back over time so you have to keep going until you are reight.

One of mi mothers neighbours takes his dog to the Osteopath and he swears by it - that is the neighbour not the dog

4 to 5 electricians per shift for the whole pit. I was with the boring and firing at first then Roadheaders and Dintheaders. One or two of us per shift covering 4 to 5 headings plus outbye. It was a case of 'have tools will travel'. But would rather do that than be the face electrician. I hated going on the face.
One return face in the Sharlston Yard seam (i.e. at best 3 foot high)..........."can tha go and change a perrard at number 60 chock; by the way the chocks are on their collars ageean".
Foooking Terrific !!!..........those were the days...........thank fook they are shut

As well as a bad back caused by the pit...........I'm sure I'm also psychologically disturbed by the whole experience

Not pillocking........if I have a nightmare its usually associated with being underground and the roof is coming in or, as was the case at DV, a river suddenly enters the workings
Talking and thinking about it like I am now can spark it off

There was no such thing as a good pit..........there were just some that were better than others..........it was crap!!!
