Don't mind it once I'm here but the dread I get from the thought of another working weeks every Sunday night almost kills me!

I've been in that position and its terrible..........17 years working underground is enough for any man.........murderers get a better sentence than that

So what I did was get qualifications which took me years to do - but without much of an income...............I'm now in a very very fortunate position where I love what I do and cannot see a time when I will fully retire.
And, very importantly, I'm not in a position now where I'm competing with low wage earners from countries such as Poland

So my advice is always to be on the look out for a change...........and always accept retraining

I'm sitting here thinking exactly the same thing. I hate my job. I hate every minute of it. I hate it even when I'm not doing it and I can't stop thinking and worrying about it. I talk to other people and the vast majority of them seem to actually enjoy their jobs. I don't get it. Why would anyone enjoy selling a large part of their life to someone else?

I used to hate my job and worried about it the wholetime, and only continued to go through with it due to decent money. I recently changed my job totally and earn less money now, but love my job and going into work is actually something i love doing because i now help people and not try to rip people off (hard selling) like i did before. I spend more time with my children and its quality time, not worrying about work time. Im not better off financially but i am in every other way. Its hard nowadays to strike a balance and not everybody would do what i did but it suits me and i wish id done it sooner. Good luck to anybody though that works hard for a living, whatever that maybe.

You are either already competing with low wage earners already and not realising it, or you will be shortly. Its a global economy and you need to find a niche, adapt or reduce your expectations....

Counting down the days to retirement

    ...which is a ****** when I'm 38.

Work harder, take on more liability while simultaneously slashing turnaround time, all within an environment of project firefighting and panicky managers who don't have your back. I can't remember the last time we had things under control. That's when the stress builds.

I've been off this week. That means there'll be even more jobs piled up when I get back.

I've considered doing something totally different for some time now.

I used to be a teacher but got bored of it, and then worked for an educational charity organising courses (including evenings and weekends) for 17 years with about 15 staff under me.

I now run my own business and seem to work 24/7, but love it, thankfully.

did a job i hated for 13 years

quit in 1996 & went to university (when you could still get a grant)

since then worked & owned a record shop & now been DJing full time for 7 years

I make a relatively small amount of money, but enjoy 95% of what I do & I have loads of spare time to go walking in the Yorkshire Dales with my Jack Russell.

Appreciate lots of people have kids & they could't be so selfish. For me it's my life. I tried to do the 9-5 proper job, but wasn't me.

Originally worked for my dad who was a property developer whilst at uni and for a few years after. Hated the work not for me but enjoyed the time with the old man.
Moved into translation and actually love my job now. Own business n don't mind doing the odd 15 hour days or the conference calls at 4am etc

Re: Counting down the days to retirement

I admire all people who take the leap and move away from jobs they dislike for others which may not pay as much but offer a better quality of overall life.

Considering it at the moment myself as in the process of leaving my current employer. Short term I have gone out and got a job in the same sector as I just don't know which direction to take. Maybe I should in my late 30s but some other quotes above about panic from managers in the workplace, agreeing to everything, not having your back is widespread. they do say that people are promoted to the edge of incompetence though!

I would't mind being able to retire but I can't. Currently out of work having been made redundant so would like to be working for financial means but other than that I'm not missing it

I work to live, not live to work.

I enjoy my job and I'm lucky enough to be paid enough money to travel down to watch the reds quite often.

Self - employment is the best, although ice-cream sales only increase in the summer!

Re: Counting down the days to retirement

MDG - you are probably following the right strategy in doing something else part time working for someone else. Only when you feel confident that it is financially viable (and enjoyable) should you step away from your current employment. It is a big step to take.

It is an even bigger step to take when you want to start your own business. I have tried 2 other businesses - both franchises. NEVER EVER take on a franchise. And don't commit too much capital to the business in the first year or so.

I now run my own business and started small without committing any capital to it (well, only a small amount - about £1,500)!. Over the last 4 years I have cashed my pension in and reinvested it in my business. I have not looked back. Okay, it may go t*ts up in the future but at least I have given it a go and to date it is working well. I would have regretted not giving it a go.

Having been through the misery of being redundant and unemployed during a recession, I said that once I got another job I wouldn't resent it. I try to remind myself of that on Sunday nights.
