filled with loanees or playing in league one, pushing on for promotion with home grown players such as RNL, Digby, Clark and Rose in the team?
Very good question that one. I honestly think at this moment in time I`d enjoy seeing some home grown lads having a go in league 1. But a lot of fans would turn on them if they were not good enough. I can remember poor Nicky Wroe getting pelters from an unsympathetic section.
Obviously i'd want to stay in the championship at all costs so we don't lose millions of pounds and because the standard of opposition is much better. I don't see though how we can't have both. Southampton are doing really well in a league they weren't expected to perform so well and with 21 English players in their squad, many from their own academy. Wish we were like that.
I'd rather see us playing local lads in league one at the minute or indeed picking those local lads in our relegation fight.
The latter. Every. Single. Day. In fact I'll clarify that. I'd rather we bit the bullet and stopped with this short termist, season by season approach we've had for 5 years. Without investing in the likes of Digby/Rose/Lazarus then we're at some point going to be relegated and these lads will have been released and we'll have very little in terms of foundations. However, if we say 'actually, we might be relegated because unfortunately that's the problem with not having much money, however, what we are going to do is invest in these young lads, play them week in week out and then one of two things will happen: 1. They're brilliant, we sell them for lots of money and that allows us to invest in better players. 2. They're not very good in the Championship, we get relegated but then we have a foundation of players that could compete at L1 level' I remember a few years ago Southampton did something similar. They were skint, had no money and played the likes of Lallana every week. They were relegated but then now this lad is in the England squad. It can be done. But that needs a strong 'board', not one that includes a fella who has been here 30 years and is, by the looks of things, not involved at all other than to make his case for the FA Board, that can stick by their convictions and do things properly and tell supporters that they have a plan and it's the right one and see it through.
Id rather see us int Championship. If you wanna see lower league football with players that arent good enough go and watch Wombwell Main.
Didn't we have a season with about 6 or 7 home-grown players in the side during our Pub league days. Think we struggled that season. No, give me Championship football any day over league one. Ask the dee darrs and Brizzle if they;re happy. By the way I believe we have a squad good enough to compete around mid-table in this league, just think our manager isn't getting the best out of his squad, for whatever reason.
I think the most was 3 homegrown players. To be honest what affection do we feel for loan players. Not reight much. I'd say we have a squad that should be bottom 6 I can think of half a dozen comparable squads that rest are much better. Even an average side like Derby have much better squads.
Sorry mate but I hate questions like this - it's a bit like asking whether you would prefer a **** or something to eat. It's not a choice of one or the other is it? We could just as easily be pushing for promotion to the Premiership with a load of local homegrown talent like we did under Wilson (Watson, Eaden, Moses, Morgan, Liddle etc) or we could be struggling in the 4th Division with homegrown talent. Or we could sign just one good loanee and do a Hull City (Frazier Campbell got them promoted a few years back) It's a bit like the question one idiot poses every time we have a good cup run. Would you rather get knocked out of the Cup and survive in the Championship or get to the Cup Final and relegated? One doesn't rely on the other, you can have both.
I never said the two were mutually exclusive , it's just a hypothetical question. I wondered what peoples responses would be, seems to be 50/50
The championship for me but I do want to see our young lads given a chance just not at the expense of our championship status. League one is a bad place to be.
Let's look at the youth players... Digby young and struggling with injuries. Rnl looked half decent when I've seen him play over last year seemed to have come on leaps and bounds then youth game looked very disenchanted. Loan might do him some good, get a few games bit of confidence etc. Rose... Scores for fun in the kiddy games. Can he do it with the Misters? Personally I think he'll struggle to impose himself. He makes at gazredtyke look like Atlas. Playing against bairns is hindering his development. Could do with going down the leagues and train and play with some proper meat head defenders who still play the man or ball mantra. Needs to develop some nous. Like Fallon did with Shrewsbury...
DeeTee you keep saying it but Rose can stand up to Centre backs and if they kick him he gets back up. You are saying it like its one kick and hes gone. Hes a tough Cookie
I'm with you on this pal, I'd be quite happy to establish ourselves as a good solid championship side
He might get back up but he could do with getting on the roids and getting down the gym so he doesn't get knocked down in the first place.
