Lampard, Rooney and Cole, possibly Baines. Not seen enough of Barkley yet to make any sort of judgment. But the rest are mediocre at best, IMO.
How are you defining international quality? They're all international quality based on the fact that they're playing in an international game. If the question was more like, 'how many would get in the top 5 sides in world football?' I would argue probably none, with the exception of Rooney who might get a run out.
That's a good point. I would say that my picks are based on who I consider decent enough to be playing football for England based on my experience over the past 30 years or so. Which isn't necessarily answering the question, as you quite rightly point out. Basically I think the current crop are pretty crap, with a few exceptions. Just my opinion, of course, and I'm sure certain people will disagree, probably the younger ones.
There's a few in there I've never heard of. It's not that I can't place them, I haven't a clue who they are and can't ever remember even hearing their names. As for your question: Rooney, Lampard (although he's getting on a bit and I don't think he ever realised his full potential at international level), Baines, Cole (is he past it? Not sure), Hart and Townsend, if his performances in the last two qualifiers are anything to go by. So, 6, with question marks over two of them being too old and another being very inexperienced. However, that side bears no resemblance to the one we played in the final two qualifiers where I thought we looked like a proper international team for the first time in ages. *Edit* And two of them play the same position!
At most i would say 8 of the 22 and that is me being generous. Baines Cole Lampard Cahill Rooney Hart Defoe Townsend
Not many and I am less than bothered about internationals these days since you only have to have bought a bag of chips in a country to play for it. But isn't the point of friendlies like this to give untried players a run out.
All depends what your definition of quality is, david flitcroft for instance thinks chris dagnall is a quality striker(from the star) . On that basis the country is teaming with quality footballers
We aren't that bad, there are very few international teams filled with top quality players. We are going through a bit of a lull at the moment though, still relying on the likes of Lampard and Gerrard who are now well past their best. Happens to the best though, Brazil are going through a lean period and I'd fancy us to beat France 9 times out of 10. I do think we'll beat Germany though, England are a lot like Barnsley - raising their game for the better teams.
Well, they're all good enough to get into the Andoran international side I suspect, but if you were to say, top 5 in the world - the likes of Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Germany, then you would say probably Rooney, Cahill and you might put Wilshere on the bench. Can you remember the last time you would put more than 2 England players in a top 5 team?
Always amazed the lack of opportunities that Defoe gets. Anyway in answer to your question - Defoe, Rooney, Lampard (was - but now getting on a bit), and maybe Baines.
Rooney and Cole only. Gerrard who is not on your lis,t but is is a bit elderly now, would also qualify in my opinion. I quite like Defoe too, But he struggles to get a game for club or country. Strange that a couple of posters include Hart in their lists?. Worst a England side for years. Not a fan of the manager either-but then he's got nowt to work with - he'll be parking the bus in Brazil...
England 02 Johnson 03 Baines 08 Lampard 05 Cahill 06 Jones 07 Wilshere 10 Rooney Substitutes 12 Smalling 14 Cole 15 Gibbs 19 Henderson 20 Townsend 21 Defoe It is very true with have only a certain number to choose from like every country but those who aren't international quality, are going to get picked due to a lack of Premier League English talent.
