I ordered summat off ebay, but they've sent the wrong thing, so to get a refund I have to send it back. They've provided a freepost address, but ebay say I need a tracking number in order to get a refund. Is this a free service the post office provide (ha, ha, ha) or do I have to pay for it? What is it that I want?

Sodding thing only cost £1.50, so it's not worth ******* about with really, but I'm not having people taking me money and sending me summat I didn't want. If it's going to cost me £5 to send back a £1.50 Lan splitter then at least two people are going to get punched, so while we're at it, has anyone got the address of the head of ebay UK?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's usually the seller of the item that has to provide the tracking number, when they send the item out to you. If they sent the item via recorded delivery, then it will have been assigned a tracking number, and they should have provided it.

Email the seller and ask them.

I've got the item, I'm sending it back, I have to provide tracking information on the parcel I'm sending.

What eBay mean is that, unless you can prove that the item has been received by the original seller they will not support you in the event of a dispute. It's the same when you are buying something, i.e. If the seller just sends it through the post with no tracking eBay will be on your side if you say you didn't receive it. Sadly, this can lead to abuse, particularly as sellers now cannot give negative feedback to buyers, no matter how underhand they've been. eBay and paypal are very much on the side of the receiver during transactions.

I'd advise that you send it back by Freepost, as they have said, but get a proof of postage. Then if it goes missing you can make a claim against the post office. Just make sure you put all the details of the item in the envelope, so that the seller can identify it when they get it back.

The good thing is that most sellers are decent sorts who won't try to diddle you.

I think "tracking" is a catch-all term ebay use. In the UK you'd have to pay for recorded delivery which costs more than the useless ***** they sent you.

Just get a proof of postage from Post office and that'll do.

Doesn't work like that I'm afraid! eBay rules say the incorrect item has to be returned first.

As Jay says, they don't have the correct item anyway, but if they did the best thing would be to treat it as two different purchases and order the correct one whilst also returning the incorrect one for the refund.

    Thanks Gordon, I'll do that.

Any chance you can go work for ebay and sort out all their jargon? You've just perfectly explained to me in two minutes what I completely failed to grasp in two hours of searching their web site.
