Good post - with a well reasoned argument. I don't fully agree, but that's how debates work.

I'm not sure that the Bank of England would be in a position to control the markets reaction, in the event of Scotland going out of control on their spending. We might be forced to print more money than we would like - pushing up inflationary pressures. Greece may own their debt, but eventually the European Central bank is going to be forced to print more Euros - something that Germany has been resisting.

If the Scots are that prudent with their money then why is Alex Salmond promising a big spend on provision of free childcare? All costed on the basis of very optimistic estimates on North Sea revenue.

I stand by my point that there should be no split of fiscal and monetary policy. Scotland's best move would be to create their own currency, like the "Scottish poond".

That last point about more people using our currency better chance of remaining strong? Why? Not many people used the Swiss Franc but that has always been strong. Lots more use the Euro - can that be regarded as a strong currency? In my opinion, the strength of a currency is more a factor of monetary policy.

If Scotland go mental and just spend, spend, spend then there is the potential for problems that will affect us, but I just can't see that happening. No one could foresee what happened at the end of the last decade with the global financial crisis either like, so maybe I'm being naive. At the risk of making massive generalisations (actually there's no risk, that's exactly what I'm doing) about the Mediterranean countries who got themselves in massive debt, this is Scotland, not a bunch of people taking siestas who'll get to it 'maƱana'. I can't see the Scottish deliberately fcukng up their own country.

If they did want to overspend they'd be much better off taking up the Euro so they could hide it for years rather staying with the pound and having us peaking over the wall at them all the time.

You're right about the amount of people using a currency, I just feel while ever Scotland are exporting oil and using the pound it will help it stay strong.

To be honest mate, I think I'm getting a bit out of my depth now. I've started a conversation that I really don't know a lot about. I should have kept schtum, but I've got a big gob.

Maybe the Scots would remain prudent. I just wouldn't want to commit to that chance in the long-term. Especially as North Sea oil will eventually run out.

I'll give Governments the benefit of the doubt and agree that none of them deliberately set out to **** up their own economy. It's usually down to sheer incompetence (and I include own own Governments over the last few decades in that point).

You may have a self-proclaimed "big gob" but I thought you used it to argue quite well.

Now - can you tell me where I can find the football forum?

Just as an aside, if you write schtum, Google Chrome thinks it's a spelling mistake and wants to change it to scrotum, which I found hilarious.

Jay's had a few scorums in his gob.

If Scotland goes Indie and in debt Jay will just sell them all a new credit card and ppi. He's like that. And that's the way he is.

    I love Scotland

And the Scots. It's a beautiful country and the people have always been warm and welcoming to my family & I. We're going on holiday there again for our 30th Wedding Anniversary celebrations next year and am really looking forward to it. I have never been the victim of the ignorance, intolerance and downright bigotry that has been posted on here by so-called 'better' English folk. There's no doubt that had their tirade been levelled at blacks or Asians, a ban would've probably followed.

The problem with the whole debate is it is actually quite complicated.
I would prefer Scotland to stay part of the UK - I think both nations benefit from being united but if a majority of the scottish people want to separate thats their choice and I would accept that.
As Epsom Red says though any parting must be fair
Scotland should take its share of the current UK debt
Oil is complicated I am not sure the fairest way to handle this but it is not that Scotland just takes the oil revenue having spent nothing to develop the resource - there has to be some middle ground in the way its split
but there is loads more - armed forces - Scotland will now need its own Navy Airforce and Army
Currency is an issue - under current EU rules they will have to adopt the Euro
and there are many more things that need to be considered things like the BBC are low down the list in my opinion.

The problem is that the Scots are being asked to vote for independence when none of these items have been clarified at all

The vision that Salmond is painting with scotland walking away from debt , keeping all the oil revenue , keeping the pound sounds perfect and if that were to happen I can imagine many scots thinking they were better off outside the UK

I can just imagine though that if there is a vote for independence the reality for the scots will be much more painful than they are being led to believe by the pro independence group

I do humbly appologise Hemsy. No offence was intended.
I must warn you though. There is still 10 months to go until the election and if you are fed up with it now then by the time September comes along you may just be starting to flee the country to get away from it all.

    :) Peace.
