Just a thought, but you can't go wrong with voting for Hannah Cockroft.

Nice, down to earth, yet extremely competitive Yorkshire lass.

Shows what can be achieved if you put the effort in, and a huge "Personailty" to go with it.

If ever you wanted a role model who hasn't had everything laid on a plate, who has had to fight for everything, then this is the person.

No massive salary, (she had to borrow a racing wheelchair from the charity I work for just to get started), and still comes back to inspire the next generation.

    From the BBC

Paralympic gold medallist Cockroft followed up her success at London 2012 with the sprint double at the IPC World Athletics Championships in Lyon.
She won the T34 100m and 200m titles and set a new championship record of 17.88 seconds in the T34 100m.
The 'Hurricane' also won the T33/T34 100m race at the Anniversary Games in London, setting a new stadium record.
What she said: "Everyone is expecting me to go out and win each time, and that is a challenge, but I want to win every race that I can enter."

Online Vote: You can also vote online. In order to vote you will need to be registered with the BBC sign in system, BBC iD. You can register at any time. If you are already registered with a BBC iD, you do not need to do anything but will have to sign in in order to vote on the night.
(Online votes will be limited to one vote per BBC iD account). More information on how to vote online is here.

Don't the para athletes have their own award? So not in competition with Murray? Who IMO is a stick on for it this year.

No. There is the Helen Rollason award for achievement in the face of adversity, BUT the point is, that achieving disabled athletes want to be considered in the same way that non disabled athletes are.
They train as hard, they probably have less support (certainly financially), and some of them have much better appeal, (but sadly the British public doesn't get to see it).
I have no problem with folks who want to vote for Murray, Farrah, or anyone else on the shortlist. All I'm saying is that there are dedicated Sportsmen and women out there (not in the spotlight) who are working and achieving just as well.

Good shout - I've nothing against Murray but if we are voting for "personality" Hannah wins hands down - and she has been pretty sucessfull in her sport as well

I wasn't being in anyway derogatory or trying to make a point of any sort. It was just a question re the voting as I wasn't sure. I have every sympathy with the lack of coverage para sportspeople get on the whole. Who chooses the shortlist btw that we get to vote on? Maybe a disabled sports person should be on the list by rule?

I didn't think for a minute that you were.
To be fair, I think that the panels are all disabled friendly so to speak.
I think that disability sports just isn't in the public eye as much. (Though it has improved massively since London 2012). It's a public vote though... hence my post.
I'm not trying to undermine anyone else's achievements. I think this year there is an embarrassment of riches. We have some fantastic sportspeople to choose from.

Paralympic sport gets massive OVER coverage relative to the number of people that actually go and watch it. Championship football on the other hand...

    No.
It did. Last year. Which was a good thing.
Sad day if we look at sports achievement by tv coverage alone.

Who watched Steve Cram/ Seb Coe/ Steve Ovett/ Ben Ainslie/ etc. pre Olympics?
Oh, I see you want a Championship footballer for Sports Personality .... carry on....who??

I don't believe any footballer at any level stands out in this country. That wasn't my point.

Disability sport gets a lot of coverage because it is politically correct, not because people are genuinely interested.

That may be true to a certain extent... but the point is who is Sports Personality of the Year?

Is it someone who has had the benefit of hyped up media coverage (even though they're a bit of an arse); or is it someone who has achieved, and has contributed along the way?

And whilst you can't see anything beyond the political correctness of disability sport, just think what this kind of coverage of a disabled sportsperson does to his/her peers.

The people who dare n't try sport,

If you can, please post a link.

    Thanks in anticipation

Was fortunate enough to spend the evening with Hannah and her mum recently. An amazing story of will and determination. Great lass to boot.

No it's Hannah. Unless there's a joke you were making I missed.

Being (albeit in a comparatively minor way) disabled myself I think the achievements of people like Hannah and Johnny Peacock may have more resonance with me.

But I'll be honest and put this out there - I don't necessarily think her achievement this year will win her the award.

Christine ohurugo (sp?) has just won sports woman of the year, I'd hazard a guess she'll be the highest rated woman on the personality list too.

I'm not a murray hater. I think he'll win it, and it wouldn't be undeserved. He's the sports person I think most people have talked about this year.

I'd actually be happy if it went to murray, froome (not a bad shout, three of the last five winners have been cyclists) or if he goes big in this test, say 150 +, Ian Bell.

Wouldn't have any arguments with Hannah Cockroft but I don't think she'll win a popular vote, and unfortunately I would think a lot of the people who will vote for her won't be doing so purely on her ability and achievement, as she'd like to be judged and should be, but more out of sympathy and trying to be PC. (No I don't mean trying to impersonate our owner...). Wouldn't make the votes less deserved, but still.

If Tanni Grey-Thompson never won the main award but princess Anne and her daughter have, beating George Best and Darren Clarke on those occasions, I think we can see the level of achievement is secondary to whom is the most popular. I just don't think, even with the improved coverage, that enough people will even have heard of her.

Murray will have folk voting for other people as well as himself as he polarises opinion. He only came third last year after getting to the wimbledon final, winning the Olympics and then being the first british male in 76 years to win a grand slam tournament.

Winning wimbledon this year is probably more likely to win him it, especially as there are less blatant candidates than in an Olympic year. Froome will suffer for winning le tour only a year after Wiggins, and he had no gong to hit or Olympic gold to win afterwards.

Even if bell gets another massive score tonight/tomorrow I'm not sure he'd win either.
