Inspiration to all. I read Long Walk To Freedom the summer I graduated from uni. Promised myself I would re-read it when we lost him. Amazing book by an amazing man
Ironically i was listening to the specials on my way home today, 'free Nelson Mandela' what a track, what a truly great man. The world is a lot lighter tonight. RIP, he earned it.
RIP Comrade. Sold down the river by the IMF and World Bank. Watch for Call Me Dave's crocodile tears very soon...
When I heard...............I cried Truly one of the greatest of men.........and probable the greatest man that will die during my lifetime
RIP indeed. Not just a great Man - a great human being. As Redstar intimated I suspect, rather like with the death of Thatcher, there will be a re-writing of history in the media in the next few days; "Britain always a friend to Mandela and a supporter of the new South Africa, fully behind sanctions, helped to overthrow the regime blah, blah, blah." All cobblers of course. Not how I remember the 80's. There were a lot of brave Britons who supported Mandela and the ANC - but I don't recall that being the case with Govt, Business, or many in sport and the Arts. No matter; that's for the future. Tonight, it's just worth remembering a great Man, who with his passing makes the world feel less of a place.
Truly an inspiration to everyone. I hope South Africa continues to remember his efforts to strive for justice & peace.
I just read that the world premiere of the film of that name took place tonight and he actually died while it was being screened. I find that pretty spooky. RIP to a great man.
And here's me thinking he were a Terrorist who killed innocent women and children. How wrong am I eh. #controvertial
A galactically stupid comment, made even more stupid by your spelling #iddiott Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm not of the thought Mandela was the saint he is being painted to have been. But I think the 'women and children murderer' stuff was pretty much white apartheid rule propaganda. Yes he has links to terrorist organisations. Yes I think that puts into question the high esteem he is held, to a point. But I don't think he ever personally killed or even made orders for anybody else to kill for him, certainly not innocent kids. Might be wrong. But I certainly don't know for a fact whether he has, so won't go accusing. You chose to do just that. Based on what it says on google, newspaper columns and tv/radio reports. Which are in no way politically ran and never spin speculation as fact. His achievements in changing not just South Africa but the world cannot be overlooked and he has at least in part earnt the almost universal respect he has even in death. His part in overcoming apartheid and changing attitudes to racism are facts, not speculation. He's not Robert Mugabe. He's earnt his peaceful death in the comfort of home. Hopefully it wasn't undignified, painful or was there prolonged suffering. The level of reporting is way over the top for my tastes, especially given the other stories that are being mainly overlooked or shoved into the background re the tides, flooding and deaths at home, but the majority of others seem to hold him in higher regard than me and don't agree it's being overstated. So your statement wasn't just controversial. You are allowed to have an opinion, I'm perhaps closer to yours than most other peoples for a start, but I'd suggest you should at least sum up the facts before making such brash statements. Especially on a subject that is bound to be so emotive.
No doubt the Hypocrites within our goverment will be praising the great man yet they are creating poverty here and they themselves are considering forming the same POLICE STATE Mandela fought against all his early life? I remember Thatcher and her governments attacks on him..
