Isn't it? Two different armies were shooting at each other on a battlefield, I don't know what else to call it. What would you call it? And if I've used the wrong word, does it really matter? I don't think it makes the situation any different if we use a different word.
One thing that troubles me is the feeling I get that if you've never been in the armed forces, you have no right to an opinion on what is right or wrong in war. I've come across this before in discussions with servicemen. I wouldn't for a second doubt the incedible bravery of anyone who serves, but for that to override the possibility of debating the validity of people being sent to war, for instance, I find really unsettling.
What point are you making? Are you adding anything to the discussion or just, well, I don't know what you're doing. Anyway, for the record: War. Noun. A state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/war Which sums up exactly what's happening in Afghanistan doesn't it? Or don't you agree?
Hemmsy, I know you take a lot of flack from a few BBS posters, most of this unwarranted in my opinion. That said, you do need to read and understand the posts before jumping in and commenting. Britain, in conjunction with other nations, is at war/conflict with terrorism and this includes Afghanistan. You simply cannot argue against this. If you do, then I have zero sympathy for any flack that comes your way mate.
It's the same thing. Conflict or war people are under an immense amount of stress in very dangerous places Phil. They make decisions that can cost them or those around them their life. You can't even begin to imagine the stress that places on people.
I suggest that you learn the difference between 'involving' and 'in' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_in_Great_Britain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Great_Britain
Explain, using your understanding of both words, why you believe it is a conflict not a war. Don't just say you heard it on the the telly that it's a conflict, so it must be, use your reasoning to tell me why it isn't war.
England went to war with Germany, thats how it's a war. England are in conflict, jay. They aren't at war with Iraq or Afghanistan.
Tell us why you think it isn't. And what do you think to this article? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Afghanistan_(2001-present)
