His panic buys of Hristov Krizan and Tinkler, when Premiership experience was required, he is not saviour some people wish to think. I don't think he is the one this time for me.
It was, can we gamble on someone who was last at this lever 15 years ago, it's a whole different league now.
I believe he is the man for the job. Though not to worry, the job is Mellon's. Another classic lack of ambition shown from the club if so.
He also signed Sheridan, Wilkinson, Hendrie, Bullock etc who got us there in the first place. In the Premier League he signed Ashley Ward and Jan Aage Fjortoft - the like of which we've never seen since. All managers have a few fl;ops, didn't Alex Ferguson sign Veron, Taibi, and Ralph Milne?
Bullock and Sheridan were signed by Viv Anderson. But I do agree with you. Anyone suggesting Danny isn't the man based on a handful of iffy signings is clearly struggling to find anything wrong. Because as already pointed out, even the best gaffers throughout football sign their fair share of duds. Let's get behind Micky and the boys today anyway. Another good performance and hopefully a point or three and I'll be a happy tarn supporter. You Reds, etc.
TBF..he's a bit more experienced now days...I wouldn't let sumert that happened 15 years ago have any baring on now..
What a great reply. Im sorry Huddersfield Red but your case is weak. If we dont go for experience in Warnock, Holloway, etc then Wilson will be great. The other great thing what Wilson did was he built a spine to the team with experience. The spine was Watson, Thompson, De Zeuw, Redfearn, Hendrie, Wilkinson, all having experience. Then came Ward another great signing. THERES ONLY ONE DANNY WILSON
Re: Fjortoft and Wardy weren't bad though.... Panic buys? If you don't want Wilson back just say so, but don't try to re-write history to make a point.
He wasn't last at this level 25 years ago though was he. He spent 18 months at Wednesday and then more than 4 years at Bristol City.
We can also add the truly great Arjan de Zeeuw to that list. And Mary Appleby - a decent enough midfield player when he was later moved to there, but brilliant in the position of sweeper for which Wilson bought him. Then there's Neil Thompson and Darren Barnard, not just the best left wing backs that we've ever had at the club, but two of the best that have ever played at Championship level. And what about some of those gaols Clint Marcelle scored in the promotion season? Jovo Bosancic may have been a bit part player, but he was quality and only denied more game time by the colossus that is Neil Redfearn and the tenacity of Darren Sheriden. What wouldn't we give to have a player of Jovo's quality in the midfield right now? Then there's what Wilson did for our youth players. Nicky Eaden was almost released, he got game time under Anderson, but not to any great effect. Under Wilson he was transformed in to a quality wing back who could drop a ball in to a bucket from 40 yards. Adie Moses was putting in real Premier League quality performances in the second half of the 97/98 season. Andy Liddell was around before Wilson, but he wasn't doing a lot. He may not be talked about in the same hushed tones as Hendrie and Ward, but he was a vital player in Wilson's transformation of our club. Scott Jones may not have had the career he could have, but what about those goals against Man Utd. Martin Bullock was actually signed by Viv Anderson, but he only played him once, it was Wilson who brought one of the most exciting players we've ever had in to the team. And then there's Chris Morgan. He may be public enemy number 1 now, but he wasn't. He won the player of the year in the play-off season, ahead of the brilliant Craig Hignett. Morgan was a local hero and it was Wilson who blooded him. Tinkler, Krizan and Hristov weren't terrible players. They just weren't as good as we hoped. We were used to top quality, so when we paid a bit more than normal we expected them to be even better. When they weren't we were disappointed. They didn't stand out in the team at the time, but they would walk in to the team we have now. Anyway, any money we spent on those three was recouped and then some by the signing of Ward. We haven't seen anything like the quality of player that Wilson brought to the club and moulded in to a team since. To claim you wouldn't like him as manager now because a few of the players didn't work out as well as we hoped is just bizarre in my opinion. Particularly when you consider the signings that did work.
And to counter the argument that an experienced manager would have bought better look at the absolute ***** the vastly experienced Dave Bassett lumbered us with
For me... Wilson repeatedly gave his word that he was staying after relegation. Then just a couple of weeks before the season started, he fecked off. This gave us no time to look around, we panicked and appointed Hendrie. Downhill since he stabbed us in the back.
I reckon you are trying to find valid reasons to back up your opinion that you don't want Danny Wilson, and whilst your opinion on him coming back is fair enough, because we are all entitled to an opinion, I think you should just leave it at that, rather than trying to justify it, if those are the best reasons you can come up with. Because the lack of any substance or credibility in your reasons prove why he is the right man.
