I met both Flicker and Hill twice, in Spain. Hill seemed an arrogant tosspot, and Flicker was very polite, willing to chat and just genuinely down to earth. Also Hill's treatment of Goran Lovre when they were training looked to me like downright bullying. The way he spoke to him etc. As for his management skills, obviously suited to the lower leagues, not just on the pitch, but in the media also, so so different to his beloved Rochdale and he clearly couldn't handle it. All in all he was a poor championship manager, riding his luck at times.
An example of how Keith wanted us to play and when it did work was Birmingham away last season. Obviously it was a flash in the pan, but that's what he was aiming for. At that point, most people on here and in general were literally terrified that Hill was going to leave for Blackburn, Bolton or Blackpool. Then it all went wrong and suddenly most people said they'd said he was **** all along. Not true.
Keith Hill managerial stats for Barnsley Played 74 won 19 draws 15 losses 40. Win percentage 25.68. Aye we were just like Barcelona...
But when we were good we were very very good... Not trying to annoy people, just explaining why I liked him being manager. And why I'd appoint Tisdale. A non-**** version of Keith
Because if I have learnt anything in the last year on this forum, it is that there are two sides to a coin and he can't possibly give his opinion so I'm not going to explain why I feel as I do towards him because that would make me a lovely person. I have my reasons, as does the other poster you refer to. But the bloke gave it his best here and has now departed. I will probably still criticise/praise things that he did, but I see no point in tell tales. If I was that way out (and I have been, in the past, hence my 'learning') I would have told everyone in some bizarre attempt to get others against him. But I think I know better than that these days, and karma is a bitch.
That's fair enough, Whitey. But, as with the other poster, why say it in the first place, as Flicker has no right of reply? Admittedly, what the other poster said was a lot worse than what you said (he called Flicker a two-faced ****).
Why? Because the thread where I said I didn't find him likeable was full of other opinions suggesting he was. And from people who will have spent no more than 5 minutes in his company, and in a public setting. I put my own opinion across, but divulging the details I need not do.
I think what folk are after is context - ie without specific quotes etc, how long had you spent in his company, and in in what setting - public or one to one ? In order to formulate your opinion ? Not just you though, everyone who 'knows' Flitcroft/Hill - it'd be interesting to know on what basis they have made their decisions. I'd wager that without a detailed knowledge of that person at work and away from work, nobody can say what they are definitively like.
*edit* - I don't particularly care if anyone 'likes' them or not, it's the folk that 'know' what Hill & Flicker are like that intrigue me.
I agree with that. But then, I'm not the one suggesting he's a lovely, honest and humble man etc. I merely stated my opinion in a thread a week ago that I personally didn't find him likeable. I have reasons for that. Experiences. And friends who have had similar experiences. But digging him out on here isn't achieving anything. He may well be the nicest bloke you could ever meet, he may not. We can only judge that on our own experiences, and the majority of us have only spent time with him in his capacity as manager of the football club. Away from that, away from the pressure, who knows?
Keith is easily or least successful manager since we got promoted way behind Flitcroft, Robins and market leader Simon Davey. Not sure of championship only stats for Ritchie. But isn't the only thing that really matters. Why celebrate our biggest failure?
Because numbers don't necessarily tell the full story. Ever. We had a poor record under him for various reasons. Not all of them are/were Keith's fault.
I liked Keith hill, was gutted he got sacked, didn't think he deserved the sack. I found him funny, with a sense of humour. He's like marmite, and I loved the bloke. Never failed to entertain me.
Flicker's record isn't better than Keith's. Flicker has just overseen our worst start to a season for 60 years or summat daft. He holds the record for being manager for our worst ever home defeat, our worst home cup defeat, our worst opening day home defeat, and our biggest ever squad. He rightfully gets praised for that spell last season where we won 5 or 6 on the bounce, league and cup. But from about late February until the day he was sacked we lost a lot of matches. As did Keith before getting the sack. Difference being, Keith had the rug pulled continually, either through injuries or player departures, and was given **** all to replace them with. Whereas, Flitcroft failed off the back of being backed to the hilt, with our 'best squad' in years etc etc. Call them both successes, or both failures. But I'd pick Keith every time if I had to. At least he had a plan, a vision, however doomed it may have been, he had one. I haven't a clue what Flitcroft was trying, and going on his interview the other day I'm not sure he had a clue himself. Out of his depth, and in the end it showed. But his motivational skills worked a treat last season, as did the players under him who fought for our status and their futures/contracts. They'll do similarly now for Mellon, because rather him than a new manager who might find them out...
