Am I alone in thinking that certain sections of the community are getting too much for nowt now?

Benefits in my opinion should never allow an unemployed individual or a low paid individual to have a higher income to expenses ratio than an employed or higher paid individual.

I've got nothing against benefits but I feel at times certain people get too much because people only look at their income and ignore the free council house, council tax, gas/electricity etc which should all be included in my opinion

Heard a cracker yesterday. Smack heads and alcoholics getting thousands of pounds to get themselves admitted to Kendray hospital. Then get all modern conveniences for free.

I said the same on the other thread but they don't get free gas and electric although they do get free prescriptions, dental treatment, eye tests and glasses etc

The Joseph Rowntree Trust has just released a report showing the poorest people in society are the working poor whereas a single mother on benefits with three children or more never needs to work.

The best scam with that is alcoholics on sickness benefits roping in their mates as carers, as seen in Barnsley's less salubrious drinking establishments most mornings.

Sorry I realised the mistake with the gas as soon as I posted. What I meant was the lower tarrifs for the 'vulnerable' unemployed, the cold weather payments for the same people and the free ultra energy efficient boiler installation for the same people worth around £1000-£1500

I agree with you, if all the real benefits and discounts are added together then the unemployed are better off than a minimum wage earner

Which ignores the main point of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation's campaign which is to make pay through the living wage. Which is the real problem

Not belong before those with cards are selling stuff on and buying stuff for folk with good jobs. Whilst most will complain they will probably not refuse a bargain either.

Bit like the cheap cigs and booze.

Do they get free gas/electric? You'll probably find that low income families actually spend more on their energy than most.

And I think it's a good idea - it's food that's close to sell by date, damaged etc and is looking to help those on low incomes, not just benefits.

I don't think it's a case of either or though is it? The two are unrelated. Tax avoidance needs looking at just as much as the issues raised here. It can't be right that people in work are worse off than those out of work. It can't be right that there's a system in place in which there is little incentive to get out there and go to work.

As I said earlier I meant the lower rates for utilities and the free boiler to further reduce living costs whilst employed people need to spend over a grand for the same installation.
I actually think that the principle of a budget supermarket full of knackered stuff is a good idea but it shouldn't be limited to those who already get the most financial assistance as that is unfair and aids in making them better off than hardworking people on minimum wage who are entitled to nothing

Unfortunately you won't be on your own. I just wish you were. There's a distinct lack of empathy towards fellow human beings generally, the internet in particular. The budget supermarket in the title of this thread is stocked (in the main) using products that would otherwise be discarded as waste and offers a range of help to people claiming benefits.

People on minimum wage are often entitled to benefits. Isn't it a stupid stat that the majority of people claiming benefits, like help with rent, are in full time employment?

I see why people get the monk on but it's not exactly a life of luxury being able to buy snap that no one else wants.

Reading this thread, it's clear the Tories are getting their message through to you. Just don't look up...

    It's a tough one.

I work with people who claim benefits and are looking for work. They have it really tough - the look in their eye tells me they want to get work and improve their lives. But i work with those that want work - there are plenty out there I don't see who play the system and have no intention of finding a job.

The Goldthorpe scheme is admirable- those that have little to live on will benefit from it. But it could be seen as another benefit, another disincentive to find work, and no doubt some will milk it for that very reason, whilst pretending to find a paid job.

Like all benefits it's impossible to distinguish between those that are using because they have to and those that want to, as a lifestyle choice.

I'm all for it though - the positives outweigh the negatives for me. There's enough benefit claimants out there who genuinely need the service to justify providing it, as opposed to those that are taking advantage

So why not open it up to those struggling on minimum wage but unable to claim benefits because of the short sighted rules we have that penalises low paid work over unemployment?

That would be great, but how can you work out who qualifies? This is the fundamental issue with the benefits system- you either qualify for it or you don't. There is no middle ground

Actually there is a middle ground- those that are on poor salaries and in poverty. But the government see those as less of a priority than those with no income at all.
