Agreed. Terms like "touch of a rapist" i've heard many times over the years when someone has misplaced a pass or screwed up a shot. Doesn't mean he doesn't think rape is a bad thing.
I didn't find what he said offensive - my guess is he toned his message down from 'being fuc*ed by the Australians' to 'being 'ar*e raped.' However we all have things which we find offensive and we shouldn't be making a judgement on anyone else who says they are offended about something. The easy response is to regard what Swann has said as a bit of trivial banter. The difficult issue is how do you respond to those who feel genuinely offended.
It amazes me what people take offense to - if in fact the people that are taking offense to this aren't actual rape victims. If someone says 'I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than go watch (insert team here)' I wonder if someone who has had pins stuck in their eyes would actually take offense at this or take it as a joke as it's bleedin' obvious that of course they wouldn't rather have pins stuck in their eyes than do whatever. It's a throw-away comment that's pretty meaningless, just another way of getting your point across.
Re: Yup Its easy to blame the pc brigade for possibly going over the top, but if someone who had actually been raped found it offensive would it still be branded a storm in a teacup or would we then be blaming the rape victim as attention seeking ? I understand that things like this can be taken out of context but with 1000s of words in the english language is it really neccesary to use something as horrible as rape to get a chuckle, personally i think not though i appear to be in a minority
I've not heard owt or if anything is happening behind the scenes. I'd love him to go back to Oakwell and I know my old man probably thinks the same, in some capacity at least, but I would think its up to Danny who he wants to be part of the set up. As I said, you never know.
Yeah, I'd say so. He called him yesterday to wish him all the best etc. When my brother was in hospital after his severe stroke the other year, I turned up at the Hospital to find Danny outside waiting to ask us if he could go in. He went up massively in my estimations although I had to tell him no due him being Sheff U manager.
Re: Yup Speaking as a right on, do-goody, bleeding heart tree-hugger myself, - I've got much much bigger issues to worry about than the callous comments of some jumped up cricket ****. Don't waste my time, Graeme Swann, whoever you are. I'd like to meet some of this PC brigade everyone bangs on about. Is it like the bogie man for facists?
Ive just taken a call from the 'mothers who have had sex with their sons, victim support charity' and in particular Bobby Tupper. I have retracted my previous statement and apologise profusely.
"I know for a fact that Wilson has spoken to Winstanley" That mad bird will then say she's not going anymore unless Danny fingers her.
The problem here is 2 fold though - the people stirring this up aren't really personally offended - they are being offended on behalf of others and they have no idea whether they really are offended or not. The second problem is the only way to stop some people being offended is to offend others so we have to be sensible about what is and what is not acceptable. You may be too young to remember Mary Whitehouse - but she made a career out of being offended by just the sort of TV programs I enjoy watching - so she and her followers were offended by Monty Python, Kenny Everett Spike Milligan, Benny Hill, the Carry On films and anything else that didn't sit with her narrow christian vision of what was allowed - she would probably even disapprove of the costumes worn in Strictly come dancing were she arround today. So you have a choice either offend the puritanical group or offend the liberal group either ban Monty Python and offend me or allow it and offend them. There is a huge difference between a light hearted comment not directed at anyone - eg the Swann comment and targeted abuse meant to cause offence Unless of cause the Australian Cricket team take offence at being branded as rapists
