Still need effort to go with the ability. The best players in the world, Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez, Aguero etc all put the effort in.

I'd say it's about right this insistence on robotic football rather than expressive football will always limit us.

Big fan of Messi but can't recall seeing him do a lot of 'tracking back'

Really? Generally considered to be a worker to go with his extraordinary talent. What about the other players I named, could name a load more too.

Is it a coincidence that none of the players you mentioned are English? Perhaps it's more to do with emphasis - which attributes are most highly valued as kids are growing up? I remember seeing my eldest lad playing in a kids' team when he was about 10 and being shocked at the approach - all about 'pushing up' and 'tracking back'. The only thing that shocked me more was the behaviour of some of the parents.
Perhaps it's changed for the better since then.

    Chuckling at that, mate

Effort before ability every time with some. 'Twas ever thus, but is now sacrosanct in the modern game. Excuses are always made for those lacking in skill yet high in work rate, but those who have the talent & ability are often derided as 'luxury players'. Provided a player runs around, flies into tackles, then failure to create with skill on the ball through passing & dribbling is overlooked & forgiven. As a footballing nation, we're more concerned with turning the talented & skilled into athletic runners, rather than the other way round, instead of encouraging them to express themselves with the ball.
If a player can do both, then great. But, as always, he'll be playing with the top clubs, not at Barnsley and rarely these days will he be English, he'll be an expensive foreign import. I wonder why(?) At best, we at Barnsley employ the ones who can either do one or the other, not both and have done so since I started watching us in the 1960's. However, the talented ones will always be subjected to derision at the expense of the enthusiastic, yet limited, player by some.
I'm not in tune with the modern game with it's talentless athletes and do you know something? I'm glad.

Sorry but you've got to work out without the ball in Midfield.

People on here are blaming Wiseman and Kennedy for the game against Derby and okay they might not have done everything right but it doesn't help when the midfield do little and stop tracking runners and there stood men.

McCourt Mellis and Etuhu switches off then they have 3 players spare. Even if they have one spare player your in the poo but if they have 2/3.

In the Conference and league two you might get away with it but the more you go up the levels the more every players got to defend.

In the premier league one player switches off for 5 seconds can cost the team a goal. Doesn't matter how good the other players defend that player getting away from is man can cost you a goal. At the championship a player switches off for 2/3 times it's likely to cost you a goal.

    Sorry, Phil, but

I stand by every word I've just posted. If that makes me a BBS pariah and footballing dinosaur, so be it. I can live with that. If you, or others, don't agree with me, then fair enough. That's your right. I can't claim I speak with more authority or credibility than any other poster on here. But, at the same time, no one else on here (and I do mean NO ONE) can claim they speak with greater authority & credibility, either.

What, like do some press ups or something until you regain possession?

If all our players have to defend, that means the opposition players are attacking. It should be the other way round, make them worry about us. We can't do that just by running around waving our arms about.

If we could win games by being good at defending we would have done so by now, since we've been trying it all season.

    Re: Chuckling at that, mate

I remember watching an U14's game with my mate who was ref at the time.

Ball lumped up field, the central defender takes it down on his chest, moves it to the side to avoid the on rushing forward and played a lovely ball off to the midfield. I was thinking what a great piece of skill & composure he'd shown.

His manager went crazy, shouting at him, telling him not to mess about with the ball and get shut.

I think there could be an argument whereby the best coaches at a football club should coach the kids not the first team.

The untried, inexperienced coaches starting out in their career end up coaching the academy and then get promoted to the first team if they do ok. Wonder what it would be like if the guys with the coaching experience took the kids?

I agree, too many Barnsley fans think that running around and being committed, shouting and waving your arms makes you are great player. It was always thus.

I still remember the culture shock when Billy Ronson replaced Ronnie Glavin. For the benefit of younger supporters Billy was like Perkins on speed. Many people were happy though I guess. He would certainly appeal to a good number of today's supporters if some of the opinions on here are anything to go by.

No, all hard working players are *****, according to some. Yes there's no replacement for pure talent but I can't stand players who have all the makings to be a top player, but give very little application to the immense talent they have.

Which is why I'd have Marcus Pedersen before Danny Haynes for example.

The best form of defence is to panic.

There are certain situations in life, and in football matches, where the only sensible and reasonable course of action is to panic.
