A good player is defined not only by his ability, he is defined by a lot of other qualities as well. I could list them all, but I do not think that it is necessary. High on that list would be work rate, with the ball and without. Those who say that someone can be a top player without both ability and work rate are just wrong.

I've now got an image of corporal Jones playing sweeper in a 3-5-2 formation running around shouting "don't panic" when the opposition are waiting to take a corner or free-kick.

All you are saying is that you prize effort above talent and you obviously aren't on your own. Although quite where you were looking in terms of Danny Haynes...

Yet it seems that to just have work rate alone is good enough for some !!

I know you are not saying that mate, but some seem to think it !

For me we need a blend of worker and talented, if we can get both in the same player I would cream myself, but in reality we have to take what we can. There is a place in our side for both types of player, which is what we need. I think that we have overloaded the squad with workhorses to the detriment of talent and it has been that long since we saw any real skill from our players that we are now believing that running around and waving your arms is a sign of a good player. I said 2 years ago that if we played Perkins and Dawson together we would be in the **** and we are ! I dont claim to be some guru, just someone that can see the bloody obvious, those two have loads of workrate but bugger all creative talent, they have a place in the side but without the talented player with them we end up with just a load of runners that do little else and we score few goals and the striker ends up on the wing because that is the only place anyone passes to him, which in turn strangles the goals for column even more.
Paddy has 3 players on him everytime he gets the ball so therefore in theory there should be 2 spare Barnsley players! Where they were on Sunday is anyones guess, because they never showed for the ball, they have little feeling for the game and lots of energy, Without some of each we are shagged !!

Sorry that looks like a rant !!

How much defending do you think Nasri does or Berbatov countless other players. Run run like headless chickens gets you no where.

There's the tale of Ronnie Glavin who when pulled by Clarkey about not covering or tracking back said they worry about me I don't worry about them.

    That was my point.

Closest thing we've had to that in the last few years was Butterfield and Drinkwater.

One of them is one of the leading lights of midfield in this division now, the other, arguably more talented, is sat on a ******* bench in ******* Middlesbrough because David Flitcroft said ******* no.

Both were good players but different. When Glavin lined up he was glad to see Ray McHale alongside him.

Comparing Glavin to Billy Ronson is like comparing Cranie to Futcher. Ones half decent the other once seen never forgotten. But yes McHale ran around So Ronnie didn't have to.
