    Most relevant bit
The government is proposing to set up a 60mph speed limit for a 32-mile stretch of the M1, in a bid to cut pollution.
The Highways Agency says the new restriction would apply from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.
It would be in place from junction 28, near Matlock, Derbyshire, to junction 35a, north of Rotherham.

Good to see we are trying it somewhere up North where it doesnt matter that it only inconveniences a few northerners

It was only a few months ago the govenment was talking about raising the limit to 80 to aid business - now we are going the other way
and its going to annoy me a lot when driving up to Yorkshire

I think it's a great idea, I mean, clearly Derbyshire is one of the most polluted parts of the UK.

And it obviously won't be policed by hundreds of speed cameras to raise funds will it

    Tinsley, however quite possibly is...

Actually, one of the worst places in Britain for air pollution is Wellington Street in Leeds. Not sure if it has improved recently but at one point it was the worst place outside <strike>London</strike> Buxton

Ah let's further slow down the main artery from the south to north in the 7th largest economy in the world. It's same on the way to Leeds. They've been farting about with improving the safety barrier for months. I only ever see a handful of workers. About 10 miles of 50 mile an hour average speed cameras. They simply do not care. I'd love the folk who think these things up to go sit in the queues at 7/8 in the morning on there.

I'll take a wild guess and say that's probably more to do with BOC and it's constantly burning chimney, the dozens of other factories etc that surround tinsley, the thousands of cars that are at meadowhall, the fact that yodel/dhl have one of their main distribution centres there with a huge fleet of lorries shunting around 24 hours a day and very little really to do with cars going 10 miles per hour faster than the government wants them to.

By their logic every part of the M1 would have the same level of pollution but it doesnt

We all know the real reason and that is to slow down north/south traffic as much as possible to con people into believing that we need the white elephant known as HS2

To be honest not many drivers take notice of the speed limit now

the only ones who do are the people who cause the pollution on the M1 and that is the HGVs who are limited to below the 60mph proposed limit anyway

Thats partly true but we wont have much choice as there will be plenty of "Safety Cameras" to nick anyone driving at 70mph thats fairly certain

I actually read the proposal document - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa.../M1_J28_to_J35a_MSL_Consultation_Document.pdf if you want to really depress yourself.

Its full of ******** repeats itself many times and draws bizarre conclusions - one of the reasons it gives for the limit is to "manage traffic growth" - but as the stretch is already managed that seems pointless. It also suggests more predictable journey times - when in practice all it will do is slow down traffic when there isnt any congestion for no good reason. As already stated in this thread the limit wont apply to any commercial vehicles which are all limited to 56 anyway and will almost certainly lead to more accidents as everyone driving at the same speed is known to lead to accidents due to peoples concentration wandering - already the commonest cause of accidents - and many studies have shown that forcing people to drive artificially slowly increases the accident rate.

There is a feedback form in the document which I may fill in and send off - it is a consultation document after all! but whether its likely that they will take any notice is a completely different thing. -

The Q and A section at the end is a hoot

Anybody that's traveled to Leeds on a morning through the roadworks will know what hold ups this will cause. It drops to 50 there but it's still 3 lanes and on a morning it's just a big car park. Not sure that this will help the pollution problem:rolleyes:

Still with all the cameras that will get installed they will make a few readies when it's a bit quieter and the traffic manages to get a bit of a move on:mad:.

It's a brilliant idea, if policed correctly it will actually increase the average speeds

What annoys me about these 50 mph zones is all the cars run at 50 mph and the hgv's want to weave their way thro the traffic at 55.

Do you actually drive on the motorway. If they want to try anything try it up North wher it does not affect us down South. The M1 is currently tied down to 50mph in the area stated,. An absolute joke. They are putting in new concrete central reservation. No qualms with that but to do a long stretch at once is stupid From M18 down to just before A38 60 mph will cause bunching which is when all the traffick bottlenecks. Very dangerous and all nose to nose and lots of braking.
Most motorists on the motorways do 70 and the police turn a blind eye at 80 every one is comfortable with it. So to drop it to 60 with a lame excuse is a Joke

60 mph, what a joke. Like someone else says, flies in the face of their wanting to speed up arteries to the north.
