Plus how much did it cost to expand that stretch (well most of it) from 3 lanes to 4 as well. This was meant to ease the congestion wasn't it?

Are you saying the traffic congestion on there now does not exist
Without it the area would now be gridlocked

    More lanes equals more pollution
    Dohhhhh

    No it doesn't!

More lanes equals traffic flowing more quickly and easily, hence you should be able to travel quicker ....

    Double Doh!

More traffic use it now than when it only had three lanes thus more pollution

    More cars equals more fumes

Tell you what I cannot be arsed to spend time searching for links
We have got a wind farm to run (offshore) currently running at base load 504 Mw
    Emitting no pollution
But if you can prove me wrong and show that traffic has decreased over that area in the last three years I will donate 50 quid to a charity of your choice
    Ok ?

Bit cranky this morning aren't we?

I asked you to prove that traffic had increased - not the other way round. Also if you are "at work" and now busy then why are you on the internet anyway.

Back to my original point I said how much did they spend on expanding that stretch of the M1 and that 4 lanes was meant to ease congestion, not get rid of the problem. I know the congestion still exists because I use it all the time.

    OK?

The only way it will work is if they police it properly. As you'll still get the people who will be doing 80mph and the people doing 70mph. It just creates a bigger gulf between the fastest and slowest moving vehicles in my opinion, making things more dangerous.

I live in Leeds and the M621 coming into Leeds which forks off from the M1, is 50mph, obviously you get people who ignore this which causes several accidents a year, especially in the stretch where the road goes around a blind corner then suddenly down to 2 lanes.

And when I say police it, I dont mean stick a police patrol car there once a month. Again, on the M621, there's a police patrol car parked just as the speed limit changes, about once a month. Last year I had a BMW driver speed past me at about 85mph just as the road changes to 50mph, only for him to cut across the front of me and then panic when he saw the police car. He jammed his brakes on and slowed all the way down to about 35mph almost instantly. I know people hate them, but average speed cameras are the best way of patrolling these reduced speed areas. Because if they do reduce the speed limit, they need to make sure that people actually stick to it

The problem with average speed cameras is they are actually bad for road safety if not used properly for a couple of reasons
Motorists concentrate more on their speed than watching whats happening around and also you get large bunches of traffic all doing the same speed so concentration wanders ( not to mention people using cruise control in heavy traffic to try and keep their speed at the limit) . Not a huge problem for short stretches but for 30 miles it will be.
As is often ignored, by far the biggest cause of accidents is driver losing concentration -Speeding is not one of the top causes of accidents and on Motorways in particular its very rarely the cause - the vast majority of accidents are caused by either running into the back of someone or changing lanes when there is already someone there
But this isnt about safety anyway this is about pollution.
Its a managed stretch of Motorway anyway so when its busy speed limits would be in place to manage the flow so whether iunmanaged national speed limit is 60 or 70 it will make the slightest bit of difference. Its only when the traffic is quieter and could be flowing freely at 70mph but is limited to 60 that it will affect the pilution levels - but by definition then there are fewer cars so pollution is less anyway

I regularly drive back after the match on a Saturday and at 6:30 pm the traffic is light all the 60 will do there is add 5 mins to my journey for no good reason

That's the sound you won't be making.

I'm sorry, but I travel to Leeds daily. The average speed cameras on there are an absolute joke. It now takes me around 50 minutes to get there, it used to take me 35. You get people doing 40mph. Then you get people lane swapping every 5 seconds, thus slowing others down, trying to overtake people with a margin of 2-3mph. so they sit at the side of another car for about a mile. It's an absolute joke. I only ever see about 6 or 7 workers there, too. We should be thinking of ways to make people travel faster and safer, not slower to reduce emissions. The emissions output changes from people travelling at 70 to say 60 will be immeasurable anyway. It's just another idea to keep these penpushing clowns in jobs. And, as per, the decent honest tax-paying individual like you and me, who has got business to go about, are punished and hindered. It makes me absolutely sick to the back teeth.

The M1 is now out of date. Anyone who uses it regular will see it is a glorified car park. To try and ease congestion at peak times, lights installed at some of the main junctions, extra lanes built back from junctions so stationary traffic can get out of way. Lorries overtaking other lorries and stick in middle lane until they have overtaken. Cars forced to take outside lane to make headway. Imagine the traffick clears a bit and you can make progress and you are forced to slow to 60mph. There will be some speeding fines being handed out, but there again this could be the reason for it. I agree with the guy who said it could be bulling the HS2 line.
That money needs spending on roads etc throughout the country because they are knackered
