Quite like wiseman, think he gets a lot of unfair criticism on here. You wouldn't slag your beloved bobby or Steele on here tho would you. Top Barnsley hero's
If Perkins got released at beginning of this season. There would've been a uproar on here......he's a great player, and fantastic last season. He's not been that bad this season either. Kennedy is our weak link.
Steady on Gordon. I thought both Paddy goals were magic, but not matched by Higgy's best moments? His debut alone was a better memory for me. And the perfect hat trick against Walsall. And the bullet at Wembley. And, I could go on. I love Paddy, but he's nowhere near the talent/player or impact that Hignett was. In my opinion.
I'm sorry but CO'G couldn't lace Shipperley, Ward, Fjortofts and half a dozen other strikers we've had in recent times boots.
He's a decent player and you are likening to some of the best forwards we've ever had here. I'd put him somewhere around the standard of Ferenczi myself. Good solid player who knows where the goal is.
Ah, I see Gordon. And agree totally. We won't ever see another Hignett. And when we get someone even a bit close to his standard (Hammill, Butterfield, Vaz, Howard etc) they aren't here for long.
Please, please let it be true will go down as the shrewdest business of the century if we get even 1 penny for him. Weak, brittle, dreadful defender, annual winner of hide and seek championship, cant wait to see the back of him.
Re: Please, please let it be true I don't think it's fair to call him weak, brittle or a dreadful defender. Back end of last season he was one of our most consistantly good performers. He's been under-performing this season, but who hasn't? I think the only fair cirticism is that his positioning can be poor and that has cost us. But so have mistakes from a lot of the team. Calling him a dreadful defender is way off of the mark, in my opinion.
Re: Please, please let it be true He's one of the best and the very worst player we've got. His performances in the great escape last season were outstanding. Amongst a team full of heroes, he was one of the best, if not the best we'd got. He's got all the attributes: pace, balance, skill, he puts in a decent cross and for a relatively slight bloke, he's pretty good in the air. However, a good number of his performances are the worst I've ever seen at any level of the professional game from a defender. The amount of goals he's cost us is just incredible. His positioning, or lack of, his inability to mark his man and the way he simply leaves the left winger to get on with the game in his absence is becoming legendary, but it's not just that. When he's on the move, no one will get past him, but from a standing start, when he's facing the opposition attacker, everyone gets past him. I don't know if he's got slow reactions or he can't read his opposite number's body movements, but if an attacker just pushes the ball to either side of him they're away because Wiseman takes half a second to react, and by that time they're gone. It doesn't take a fancy step over or a trick; a drop of the shoulder and the attacker is away. Wiseman will beat any player in this league over 20 yards+, but the first 5 yards are in your head and he just hasn't got it. The way he is dominated by opposition players when the ball is played in to our box is just, well, I don't know how to describe it. Corners, free kicks, crosses from open play, when they're in the air anywhere near Wiseman's man, the opposition attacker gets a free header. Time after time you see Wiseman stood there, his feet never having left the ground, the man he's supposed to be marking peeling away to celebrate yet another headed goal. Wiseman isn't the biggest bloke in the world, so it's never going to be the best part of his game, but everyone in the team has to mark someone, particularly defenders. And it's not like he can't do it. When the ball is played up from the back, he leaps well and wins his fair share of clearing headers. Unfortunately, when he's in the box and a cross comes in, he stands like a statue. On his day, Wiseman is every bit the Championship player. A good one at that. To be fair to the lad, he's had quite a few of those days. Unfortunately, he's had a fair few more where he's a total liability. I don't know how any team can afford to play someone so inconsistent. Give me a solid, dependable right back, who might never reach the same heights as Wiseman, but will only cost us 2 or 3 goals a season, not 3 or 4 a month. Inconsistency in attacking players you can live with, they win you a game with a bit of magic or they don't. Put Hignett or Glavin or Currie or even McCourt in your team and they might produce 5 seconds of brilliance that gets you a goal, or 10 seconds that gets you 2, and you win the game. When they don't produce, which, without wishing to be critical of any of them, was quite regularly, it's disappointing, but it doesn't cost you the game because you have a number of dependable players behind them to mop up (or you do in a balanced side). And you have other creative players in your team too who can score and win the game even when these players are quiet. If you get such players to play well and produce that brilliance half the time or more then you're on to a winner. It's not the same with defenders. Their mistakes and poor games cost you goals and cost you games and a team just can't live with that level of inconsistency. Give Wiseman a go at right midfield if the manager thinks he's up to it, but I don't think we can afford to play him in defence any more for the 1 in 2 or 3 games he plays well. Particularly as in the other 2 or 3 games he seems to cost us at least 1 goal. Yours, a knuckle dragger.
Jay sums up my thoughts on Wiseman better than I could. I guess when a player can have brilliant games you want to give him as long as possible so that he has the chance to get some consistency in his game unlike a Kennedy who at LB seems to have only bad games. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jay's summed Wiseman up really well. The problem is compounded further with the litter of errors M'Voto, Kennedy and Ramage are making (even Cranie who is probably our best defender) and the complete lack of dynamism in midfield. We don't seem to have many players at all who have solid all round games.
Steady on. You'd probably find better ones at Championship level, never mind the Premier League or other leagues around the world.
That post by Jay sums up exactly what I think about Wiseman - been trying to work out how to explain it for ages. We can't carry him just for the occasional great games.
