Re: Back in the 1978/79 promotion season

I remember that game and their forward changing everything but too couldn't really remember the details a bit too young but that was an amazing match.

I must've been at a different game. I thought he was anonymous until "that goal".

I will go for Kevin Keegan when he played for Newcastle against us (mid-80s).

(Apologies, just seen the other references to Keegan. That's the same performance / game I'm talking about)

Gianluca Vialli the first time we were live on Sky during the Prem season. Didn't he score 4 out of their 6.

Even the East Stand were singing "we're gonna win 7-6!" that day.

Might not be THE best I've seen but one that sticks out, ironically, was Liam Lawrence for Stoke in that classic a few years ago, although I did have a deep hatred for him at that moment, had to accept after that he was awesome that day.

Me too. Adie Moses had him in his pocket. Ref sends Adie off for two innocuous challenges, particularly the first one, and suddenly Ginola has space to breathe and he does that.

It's a good goal, but it's not as good as was made out. He only actually beats two players - Eaden and Morgan. Blackmore jumps in behind him for some reason (well, I do know the reason, because he was crap), while I have no idea what Vat of Lard was trying to do. Don't get me wrong, he beats Eaden and Morgan really well, the finish is pretty cool too and he runs a long way with the ball, but the reason he can run so far with the ball, in so much space, is because there's an Adie Moses shaped hole in our defence who wouldn't have allowed that to happen.

Hendrie played Moses at right back to mark Giniola. It worked, Ginola was rendered ineffective. But the ref didn't like having such a famous player marked so tightly so he sent off the defender causing Ginola the problems. I'm sure I saw the ref celebrating when he slotted it home.

I always remember us making Simon Garner look like Pele whenever he played against us.

Me n'all. Simon Garner for Blackburn, Roger Palmer for Oldham. Always seemed to score against us.

That sounds about right. I don't think he ever played ***** for long though. He was a cracking player at this level.

As my husband is an Oldham fan, whenever they score (which isn't often, admittedly!) sounds of "Ooh Roger Palmer, Ooh Roger Palmer" ring around the house. Even they were quite good back then!

Not the best to have played against us but he scored in every game he played against us I think!
Andy Cole, he even scored when we beat them in the FA Cup !

Matt Le Tissier in the Premiership season, October I think, League Cup. he was superb and scored one of the best goals I have seen against us. Then that **** Kevin Davis scored right at the end to win it for them !! Ales Krizan played one of his rare games that night , looked decent as well, if my memories are right.

Yep Prosinecki's display was the best i've ever seen.

Mark Hateley sticks in the memory too, to a lesser extent. Andy Carroll looked villainous. Michael Owen was like lightning.
