For an industry that pretty much covered the whole town, it's amazing how in the space of 20 years there's barely any evidence of the mining industry left. Suppose you could have said the same ten years ago as well. My only memory was looking out of my bedroom window as a kid towards Blacker Hill and all you could see was rolling slag heaps - today this just looks like a semi-pleasant piece of natural countryside.

I did a lot of biking on the TPT over the summer and from Worsbrough through Wombwell over to Manvers it amazed me how extensive the rail network must have been with all the junctions going off in different directions at various points - I can't ever remember there being actual tracks on any of these sections although I'm guessing there was when I was a kid. Does anyone know if these lines were exclusively for freight (coal) traffic or were there some passenger lines as well?

That's the way I see it too. I don't hunt myself, but I don't have a problem with it if it's to eat and it's not endangered animals or animals with a low population.

In 1984 I was 22 and working for Arnold Worsleys butchers. I was engaged to br married and saving to buy a house. My wages were crap, but we went on holiday to the Isle of Man TT. I didnt have a car and had sold my motorbike to pay for the holiday, so when we got off the ferry in Douglas, we got into a taxi and told them where we wanted to go, after a couple of mins he asked where we were from and when I said Barnsley he stopped the car and told us to get out as he would not drive anyone that was " Trying to hold the Country to ransom and we could fu cking walk ", Needless to say I was not impressed by his attitude and thumped him. I spent 8 hours locked up in the Police station that evening, but later on in the week I met the driver again and this time, a lad from Doncaster thumped him !!

This is typical of the attitude we have in this country still today - the vast majority will just go along with whatever policies the government have at a particular time. The strikes were probably the last time a large number of people actually stood up to the government.

the strike was engineered to make sure it was the last time a large number of people stood up to government.

If we (British population) all decided to eat rabbits or pigeons or hares.............then how many of these would still exist more than 5 years in this country?
Wildlife is wildlife and should remain wild.
No one owns wildlife we are just taking care of it so future generations can see it.

Well Young Todger if we all suddenly had a craving for more game then it would and is in some respects farmed,as we do with Trout,Salmon,Chickens, cattle,Sheep,Pork yada yada yada therefore producing enough for the increase in demand.

    you talk daft nudge,

rabbits breed like lightning, far quicker than we could eat them, same goes for pigeons.they can have half a dozen nests full every year,i shoot pigeons for farmers because they cause so much destruction, but tha wouldn't see that sat in your hide gawpin at swans.
only reason rabbits arnt on every supermarket shelf is because they are out of favour and not everyone likes the taste and others see a cuddly pet,its not because if we started eating them they'd be non left,**** me give your head a shake.
did you know geese were having to be culled in Scotland?,50,000 a year because they've bred out of control and crops cant be grown anymore in the Hebrides.
theres no shortage of wildlife nudge, get your head out of the bird watching hide and you will see.
I had a peregrine falcon take one of my decoys last summer,10 yards in front of me,fantastic sight.
