    The Fitzwilliam in Sackville Street.

Now unfortunately closed, and looks derelict.

Thats right, in those days it was, shall we say, gay friendly. If my memory serves me well, Tommy moved across to the Dolphin in Wakefield taking his bar "men" with him.

I haven't seem the book you've got and I'm not saying you're reading it wrong but it was certainly called the wine shades long before 1972.

Ah, I can help you there. The pub was known as Dollies for decades, because the landlord for a long time, pre-war, was my great grandfather, Dalton Marshall, who was known as Dolly. In fact, I think my grandad was actually born in the Magnet. Anyway, when they did it up in the late 80s they simply named the pub after the long standing nickname.

Incidentally Dolly was also one of the original shareholder of Barnsley FC. He was a well known chap in the town. I went to Dollies on my 18th birthday and tried to blag a free pint on the strength of the above information, but they were having none of it.

To answer the original question, I looked too young when I was 16 and 17 to make many attempts at securing a pint, but i recall being successful at the Old Pavillion and the Wilthorpe, though can't remember which came first.
