I'm looking at getting a new Laptop and was trying to stick with W7 but almost all the laptops i'm looking at are on windows 8. So as the title says, whats it like?
I'm sorry but can you **** off. I ask a simple honest question and all I get is you thinking your comedian of the year
takes some getting used to, the lack of a start menu slows you down a bit but you can get third-party add-on ones. They have brought the start button back in Windows 8.1 but all it does is launch the 'metro' interface so really it does nothing. It's very stable though and you don't need to use anti-virus software with it, the protection is all built in and hidden away - bet the companies who make anti-virus love Microsoft now and are no doubt creating their own virus's to try and infect Windows 8 computers! If you get a new laptop try and get one with an SSD drive, mines starts up in around 8 seconds and most programmes load instantly.
What`s up with your old laptop? Maybe it can be sorted out , it will be a lot cheaper than buying another one, especially if you want to keep Windows 7 !
Arrr las bought one with windows 8 and I have to say it's the worst user interface either of us have come across. It's so user un-friendly it's unbelievable. In the future I'm going to a void it 100%. Thought I would give you a heads up.
If you went to an independant outlet like Pro Logic in South Elmsall they may be happy to back load Windows 7 on it if you prefer.
Would agree with all that. The missing start menu is the most annoying feature for me. Haven't played with 8.1 yet so not sure how it differs. A lot of people have moaned about not liking the interface and indeed you can buy laptops now that are downgraded to Windows 7 for that reason.
Although I have no direct experience of it yet myelf, other than 'having a mess around' on the samples they have set up in PC world and the like, my understanding from those who have used it is that it is quite a learning curve because so much is different, which is where the comments about it being user unfriendly will come from, and probably quite justifiably, but once you have put the effort into learning the new way of doing things, and the new features it has, it is by all accounts far superior to windows 7 in many ways. It is also very much more efficient - one of the things they apparently concentrated heavily on was the boot time in response to the increasingly unflattering comparisons between a standard laptop and the "instantly on" experience you have with a tablet.
If it helps, my boss bought me a laptop from Laptops Direct. It had windows 8, but with a Windows 7 downgrade. I.e you can choose which system to run it off. It's an Acer Aspire.
I'd give it a try, if you don't like it there is a program called Start8 which only costs $5 and makes 8 look like 7.
This has been my experience of it as well. Bought a Windows 8 laptop (one of them Lenovo Yoga things) with a view to playing around with it a bit and just couldn't get on with it at all, even on 8.1. Thought maybe it was going to be good for entertainment-type use but tricky with the business stuff but in the end I didn't even bother trying to load anything serious onto it as I'd just be making a rod for my own back.
If ya dont like Windows 8 user interface try this : http://www.classicshell.net/ Gives you the Windows 7 interface
Update. I've just been told it was Windows 8 that I was using, not Windows 7. The worst interface i've ever had the misfortune of using. Truly awful. Avoid. Buy a lovely Macbook instead
When I get round to it I'm probably just gonna stick Windows 7 on it to be honest and write it off as a bad day at the office (for Microsoft as well as me).
My advice after five previous windows systems, Splash out and buy a MacBook Pro. Best decision you will ever make for home computing. Once you are accustomed to its differences the experience is night and day for me.
Absolutely dreadful mate. I hate it with a passion. Take everything that was good about previous windows software and bin it.
