Ie. in PE and as a formal competitive sport versus other schools? any teachers or parents with school age kids can shed any light on this for me?
I do quick cricket with my class at school, you start with 100 runs + 1 for a run -5 if you are caught or bowled. Played to set overs. Kids love it.
Yes. The YCB are also one of the more proactive NGBs in the region/ country. But the problem is he school sport partnerships have gone. Ie. The staff who were there to create links between clubs and schools. So school cricket now depends on what time they have in the curriculum, (probably a small block), and the personal interest of the teachers in school, and a willingness to offer it as an extra curricular subject.
I play a bit with mine and they enjoy it. There's a fellow red in Liverpool whose school do really well at cricket. They won a trophy at the National Schools Cricket award.
Every year group at my school has a cricket team (7-11) but there's a lot of teams in the area. Golcar, slaithwaite, Linthwaite, marsden, meltham, holm firth, thongsbridge, honley to name a few. Hudds league is a decent league too.
My lads 9 and at school in Barnsley. Never picked a bat up. Take him to Shaw Lane for his cricket fix.
I used to go to those many a moon ago. Play for Darton now, and there's an old boy goes down who used to coach me. Still ******** me when I get out.
My daughter plays cricket at Kettlethorpe High in Wakefield; been to an indoor competition at Headingley last year and somewhere in Huddersfield this year...
Always enjoyed batting there Good wicket Was batting with graham stevenson (ex yorkshire & england) when he cleared the m1
As a kid when I first started playing men's cricket I used to play in the same team as Dave (Pogmore)
judging by the performances in australia right now, i would say definitely yes. schoolboy cricket is very much alive and well.
My wife's a teacher at a primary school, I'll ask her for a definitive answer about what they do at her school when she gets home, but from what she's talked about: they play different forms of quick cricket in PE, but not the proper game, and I don't believe they have a competitive team. I've heard people in the media and on here claim that schools don't participate in any competitive sports any more, but that's just nonsense. They're always entering competitions and playing other schools in all kinds of sports: football (boys and girls), hockey, tag rugby, athletics, rounders/baseball/softball. Much more so than when I was at primary school which just had a football team for the boys and a netball team for the girls. I very much doubt they'd be against having a cricket team, but I would imagine the biggest problem for them is they don't have a cricket pitch.
You never had the misfortune of playing a Thurlstone sports did you? My dad played for them for years.
