Windows 8, whats it like?

Windows 8 is designed for touch screens, so is absolutely shocking on a normal laptop - especially if using a touch pad rather than mouse. I hate it.

 

In short

absolutely superb on a tablet-type device or phone; second to none (notwithstanding the lack of "apps", which worries me not a jot).

On a laptop / desktop ...... forget it. Very stable as already mentioned, but even with 8.1, which I have been on since Beta, it is not a workable interface for those platforms.

And as for Server 2012 ......... even less workable. A joke in fact.

I have took the plunge after reading all your comments and looking at a few videos on Youtube.

I'm okay with computers not great but not bad so maybe i'll put in this thread what I think also once i've had a few days with window 8 for anyone else thats thinking about getting a PC with it on.

If it is a touchscreen laptop then you may enjoy it straightaway. If not you are constantly moving your mouse to the righthand side to bring up the charm screen.
I have it at home, seems fine once you train it to start in Desktop mode, thereafter you can dip into the tile screen and play around with it.
You can get a classic shell download to bring back the start key in desktop mode.
One thing I don't like is that it isn't obvious in tile mode how to turn stuff off, and it also maximises whatever you click, such as xbox music and you have to press the windows key to get out of it. Might have been solved in the 8.1 update.
Otherwise speedy and reliable for me, seems odd not to have a third party virus checker bleeping away as the OS does it itself.

Am I right in saying that, when you have a dual screen set up, the charm bar doesn't sit on the right hand side (i.e. at the right edge of the right hand screen), but on the right edge of the left hand screen, meaning to access it you have to delicately hover your mouse between the two screens?!

Would drive me nuts!

 

It's nothing like windows 7. I don't like windows 8 in the slightest, my brother has it on his laptop and I just can't get to grips with it. It may be okay once you get used to it, but the user interface is very different to the 'norm' shall we say

Beginning to wish I'd have gone on dole at 16 instead of starting work. 29 years of grafting when all I could be doing is f.ck all like you all day, getting up whenever I felt like it , watching Sky Sports all day and going to most Tarn away matches at the taxpayers expense.
