And wanted to call us the Barnsley buccaneer's. Would ya still go.? Just thinking about the Hull city situation
moot question as it will never happen we just are not a fashionable club to go on a rich mans arm. Its only ever going to be local lads like Cryne who have come good with money who would ever look at us. Best we can hope for is a burke like me or JLWBL winning the Euro Millions for 100+million Euros. At my stage of life I certainly would not need all that amount and would thus invest heavily in my home team... and that would over half that sum and then some easily. But even £50 - 75+ million would at best keep Barnsley only ever a Championship side long term.
A better comparison would be calling us The Barnsley Tykes, because after all, Hull City already has the Tigers as their nickname. Buccaneers would be ridiculous as it relates to absolutely nothing. I'd prefer to stay with tradition, and would be instantly sceptical about the intentions of any multiple million pound US investor.
yes Fi totally agree as tyke is a name for a dog , and as Hristov pointed out there are a lot of Dogs around Barnsley. You are going to really slap me now aren't you... I just know it.
But ... But I will still get the slapping ... won't I..... hmmmm and will you wear them boots again.... with the 7" stiletto heels... just a thought like
ahhh Cheer Leaders ... tha's not thowt of that JLWBL now 'as tha imagine reyt Cheerleaders... and not the Judd Hristov pooch Performers.
Yes, it will still be known as Barnsley FC in my eyes, the supporters eyes an everyone elses for that matter
I'd be doubting what was going on long before a name change if we were to be taken over by a foreign billionaire. Look at what has happened to other clubs in the UK who have been in that situation. It has hardly been plain sailing for any of them and even those who are doing consistently well will always have the question as to how exactly their owner made his millions. I'd much rather see a string of modest local investors who do what PC has done in making the club self sufficient, so we are relying on football talent, rather than the boom and bust that many teams in our division seem to be doing. Yes, this means that we are always going to struggle in a Championship full of clubs that somehow are able to drum up debts in the hundreds of millions, despite the parachute payments, but at least we'll have a club and will be able to hold our heads up high in the knowledge that we only spend what we earn. It would be nice to sign some of the players that the likes of Blackburn and Bolton sign, but not at the expense of falling into their level of debt. Both of those are pretty close to doing a Portsmouth if they don't get promoted soon. So, no to Barnsley Buccaneers, but no to that kind of owner in the first instance.

That would be my take on it. How many people say they sit in the C. K. Beckett Stand and how many say they sit in the Ponte End? The team would still be Barnsley in my eyes and I could refuse to wear or buy anything that said differently. If enough people had the strength of will to do that it would be a self-defeating exercise in rebranding for a new owner.
If the new owner was prepared to disregard the history and heritage of the club by changing it's name in such a manner, what's next? A totally new strip? A new ground? The club being based in another town, or city? No, thank you. Franchise football isn't for me, which is what this would be. If the club decides to go down that route, then they'll do so without me and my money. Others could do as they wish, I wouldn't dream of telling them what they should, or shouldn't do. However, I would expect that approach to be reciprocated.
